If one meditates, because one is not meditating on the subtle selflessness, it does not actually harm the innate self-grasping. However, because one is meditating on the coarse selflessness, it actually harms the imputed self-grasping. Secondly, the independent selflessness, that is, the subtle selflessness of the person, is considered complete in its characteristics by the Svātantrika school and below. However, since it is the main view of the Sautrāntika school, it will be explained here. As it says in Je's Differentiation of the Definitive and Interpretive: The selflessness of the person, according to other proponents of the tenets of the Great and Small Vehicles of one's own school, is considered to be merely the independent non-existence of a person who is not in accordance with the nature of the aggregates. The way it is, is that the self, which is the basis of grasping 'I', is like the master of the aggregates, and the aggregates are grasped as if they were his servants. Grasping 'my form', 'my feeling', etc., because the aggregates are grasped as belonging to that self, they are grasped as being dominated. Therefore, like a master and servant, clinging to the appearance of independence, not in accordance with the nature of the aggregates, is clinging to existence. When that is prevented, the person becomes merely imputed on the aggregates, and this 'merely' cuts off the existence of anything other than the aggregates. Similarly, it is also explained in the Śūnyatā Seventy, the Commentary on the Seventy Verses, Dispelling Darkness, etc. Therefore, the concept that grasps the person as an independent, substantially existent thing does not grasp that person as a dharma imputed on his own aggregates, but grasps him as a master who does not depend on the aggregates, and the aggregates depend on him, like a servant being dominated. That is the way it is grasped. Although this concept has a way of grasping the person and the aggregates as being of different natures, there is no term in the world for grasping the person and the aggregates as being substantially different. As it says in the Differentiation of the Definitive and Interpretive: Among them, grasping the person who is not in accordance with the nature of the aggregates as an independent, substantially existent thing is grasping the person as a substance other than the dharmas of the limbs, etc. And as it says in the Commentary on the Root Wisdom: If one thinks that the self and the aggregates are like master and servant, will they not be considered to be of different natures? Answer: Considering those two to be other substances does not exist in the terminology of the world. Because it is said that way. Furthermore, that concept has a way of grasping different substances.

Therefore, for a person who has this realization in their mindstream, if they could exchange their own bad body with a good body like that of a deity, they would have an actual attachment to the one who exchanges. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Because one seeks other excellent things, and because one has the wisdom of arising and ceasing, this person, through power and so on, will know that 'I' is different." Furthermore, in the commentary on the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, it says: "Although those systems want to realize that the person is not substantially existent, they do not want to realize that the two consciousnesses are not substantially existent. Therefore, saying that the person is not an independent substance is from the person's own negation, not from the basis of the person, which is consciousness." As it appears, it is necessary to distinguish the difference. The Svātantrika and Vijñānavāda schools, etc., hold that the person is nominally existent from its own negation, but they hold that the person who is consciousness is substantially existent. Although there are many reasonings for establishing such selflessness, here I will briefly explain it in two parts: stating the sign and establishing the reason. The first part is: The self that appears to be independent, the subject, is not an independent self that does not match the characteristics of the aggregates, because it cannot be established as either an independent one or an independent different from the aggregates. For example, like a rabbit's horn, this is a sign of not observing the related object. Establishing the reason has two parts: pervasion and property of the subject. The first part is: In general, if it is neither one nor different, then it is established by the power of certainty that it does not exist. The first part of the property of the subject is: The self that appears in that way, the subject, is not an independent "one" with the aggregates, because it appears to be different from the aggregates. Pervasion: If it were an independent "one" with the aggregates, then it would have to be "one" with it, and if it were "one" with it, then it would be unreasonable for it to appear as different. Establishing the former sign is: That, the subject, appears to be different from the aggregates, because it appears to be independent from it. The sign is established on the basis of the debate. The latter part is: That, the subject, is not an independent "different" from the aggregates, because it is not something other than the aggregates. Pervasion: If there were an independent "different," then it would have to exist without relying on the aggregates.
