An Explanation of the Stages of the View of Realizing Selflessness, the Essence of the Teachings, Illuminating the Path to Liberation. An Explanation of the Stages of the View of Realizing Selflessness, the Essence of the Teachings, Illuminating the Path to Liberation. An Explanation of the Stages of the View of Realizing Selflessness, the Essence of the Teachings, called Illuminating the Path to Liberation, is present. Namo Manjushriye! The unparalleled speaker, the son of Shuddhodana (Shakyamuni Buddha). The great treasure of loving-kindness and compassion, the fearless Manjushri. The great chariots, Nagarjuna, Asanga, etc. I prostrate to the assembly of scholars who are the ornaments of Jambudvipa. Manjushri, the very embodiment of the Victorious Ones' wisdom. Tsongkhapa, the lord, dancing in reddish-brown robes. Having bowed to the lineage of teachers and disciples, I will now explain the stages of the view of selflessness. Here, the basis upon which a person desiring liberation should enter is the precious teachings of the Victorious Ones. Although there are different ways to enter, one way to determine whether one has entered the teachings is whether or not one accepts the view of realizing selflessness. The teachings also have two aspects: scriptural and experiential. The main aspect of the experiential teachings is the view of realizing selflessness. If the selflessness to be realized is divided into subtle and gross, there are many, but when dividing them, it is necessary to conform to the tenets of the four schools. It is not permissible to accept that there is a view of realizing selflessness that does not agree with any of these four schools, because the way of accepting selflessness is definitely one of the four schools. As Khedrup Je said: "Moreover, for the teachings of the Sugata, the tenets of accepting selflessness are definitely four. No matter how much anyone speaks of a view of selflessness that does not agree with any of the four schools, and the methods of familiarizing oneself with it, it should be said that it has become external to the teachings of the Victorious Ones. Those who are intelligent should not believe that it is a path pleasing to the wise." Therefore, subtle and gross selflessnesses should be established in accordance with the order of the tenets of the four schools, just as the father and son (Tsongkhapa and his disciples) intended. This has two parts: general teachings and individual explanations. The first is: the self-grasping in our own minds is the root of samsara, and directly abandoning it or leaving a strong imprint of abandoning it

Therefore, realizing selflessness depends on hearing and thinking, so one must engage in it through hearing and thinking. Therefore, all four schools agree that the view of realizing selflessness is the lifeblood of the path to liberation, without any difference. Because they all agree that without realizing selflessness, it is impossible to attain liberation, there is no difference in this regard. However, there are differences in how selflessness is understood. Some Vaibhashikas consider the emptiness of a person as permanent, singular, and independent to be the subtle meaning of the selflessness of a person. The self-schools from the Svatantrika downwards consider the emptiness of a person as being empty of an independently existing substance to be the subtle meaning of the selflessness of a person, without any difference. Khedrup Rinpoche said: "The Vaibhashikas, Sautrantikas, Cittamatrins, and Svatantrikas all similarly consider that merely realizing the independent existence of a person as a substance is the complete realization of the selflessness of a person." This is what Khedrup Rinpoche said, and it is explained in many treatises such as Je Rinpoche's Differentiation of Definitive and Interpretive Meanings and Khedrup's Empty View. The Prasangikas, however, consider such selflessness to be the coarse aspect of the selflessness of a person. In general, all inner schools agree that understanding selflessness in terms of permanence, singularity, and independence is the same. For example, other non-Buddhist schools, when examining whether the self is the same as or different from its own aggregates, whether it is permanent or impermanent, based on inverted reasons, acknowledge that the self is different from the aggregates. This is because the self appears to be independent in the mind, so it is seen as incompatible with the aggregates, and therefore it is acknowledged that its nature is different from them. While the aggregates arise and cease, the self is a permanent entity that does not arise or cease, is an indivisible unity, and possesses the three characteristics of independence that does not rely on the aggregates, etc. This is a common view among all non-Buddhist schools, although there are many different views regarding the measure and other aspects. When Buddhist schools examine whether the self is the same as or different from its own aggregates, whether it is permanent or impermanent, because the aggregates are impermanent, the self is also impermanent. And it is seen that if there is a self that is different from the aggregates, it is harmful in terms of reasoning. Therefore, it is one with the five aggregates or any of the five
