That is also shown by the phrase, "What other person?" That is, from "not earth" to "not consciousness," it prevents the establishment of self in each of the six elements of a person. By "not all," it prevents the collection of the six elements. By "other than that, what other person?" it prevents the establishment of a person with a different essence from the six elements. By "because a person is a combination of six elements," it also explains the establishment of a person who is merely imputed based on the continuous collection of elements. That principle is the same for all phenomena. As it is said in the Compendium Sutra: "Know all sentient beings as I am. Know all phenomena as all sentient beings are." Thus it is said. Although one cannot find how the meaning of the term "I" is established, it is the same for all phenomena such as pots, just as it exists as merely imputed by thought when it is not imputed or examined. However, one must clearly distinguish the way in which persons and pots are imputed by thought to exist, and the difference between imputing a snake on a rope, but there being no snake there. Here, in the commentary on Entering the Middle Way, it is said that the difficulty of the ultimate view of the later Madhyamaka is also here. As it is said, because it is a difficult point, although it is necessary to explain in detail how actions are justified without inherent existence, it is feared to be too much. Again, in the same text, it says: "This noble system, even a collection of limbs and its parts, etc., cannot be the basis for something with limbs, etc. However, something with limbs, etc., is merely a name, and it can skillfully establish actions. It is an uncommon intention of the Victorious One to explain the meaning of the scriptures. Therefore, one should study this system of interpretation." As it is said, it should be known. Thus, for all phenomena, without searching for the meaning, one can understand the establishment by the power of names and terms. To grasp that it exists not merely by the power of names and terms is to grasp inherent existence and true existence. Therefore, all thoughts that grasp in this way are grasping at truth, and to establish it as it is grasped is the measure of truth of what is completely imputed. In this system, if it is grasping at truth, it is pervasive with afflictions, so it is different from the Svatantrika, etc. To illustrate how phenomena are established merely by names and terms, for example, naming a swollen belly as "this is a pot."

Just that is enough to determine the existence of the vase. If one is satisfied with just that and engages in acceptance and rejection without examining the meaning of the designation, then one will not be mistaken in actions on the conventional level. If one is not satisfied with that and still searches for the meaning of the designated vase, such as where the belly, mouth, neck, and base of that bulging vase are, then one will not find the vase, and therefore there will be no way to engage in acceptance and rejection. Similarly, this should be applied to all phenomena. It is not enough to just understand these things with words. One must be able to generate a definitive understanding of the meaning from one's own mind. Merely relying on nominal designation establishes imputation, and because it is not imputation, one must understand from the depths of one's heart the principle of lacking inherent existence. Otherwise, no matter how much one speaks of non-inherent existence and non-truth, one will not understand the meaning from the depths. Therefore, that nature that is not merely established by name and convention is called the object to be refuted, the self. Negating that very thing on the basis of a person is the selflessness of a person, and negating it on the basis of phenomena such as the eyes and ears is the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, one must distinguish between the difference between the self to be refuted and the conventional self, and the difference between the innate thought of "I" and the innate grasping at self. Briefly explaining how to establish selflessness through reasoning, there are two types: establishing the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena through reasoning. The first is divided into two: the reasoning of being separate from one and many, and the sevenfold reasoning. The first has four key points: the object to be refuted, pervasion, the determination of being truly separate from one, and the determination of being truly separate from many. The first point is: this innate grasping at self, on these five aggregates, believes that there is a complete "I" that does not depend on them, or that the "I" is merely imputed on its own aggregates, rather than being inherently established on the aggregates from the beginning. One must definitely determine this way of grasping. The second point is: if it exists universally, then it must exist in either one or many, and it is established by relying on the certainty of this pervasion. The third point is: how reasoning harms the idea that it is one with the aggregates. The fourth point is: how reasoning harms the idea that it is other than them or different in nature. Here, there are two ways of grasping as the subject. The first is: I, as the subject, by nature
