For this reason. This is impossible in the nature of phenomena, because there, it is established by distinguishing different bases of emptiness as the subject, and because there are parts such as whether or not different individuals comprehend, etc. Secondly, the absence of true plurality is: the sprout, as a phenomenon, does not exist as a true established plurality, because there is no true established singularity. This is pervasive, because if there is a plurality, there must also be a singularity. The sign is established by negating partlessness. Thus, if all phenomena are established as having parts, then each phenomenon is also established as having both parts and a whole. Although the parts and the whole abide as one entity, when they appear to the mind, they appear as different entities, which is undeniable, so the way they appear and the way they abide are different. Although these two abide as one entity in the way they abide, they appear as different entities in the way they appear. Such a thing is merely a false way of abiding established by the power of appearance to the mind, and not a way of abiding that is truly established, because if it were truly established, the way it appears and the way it abides must be the same, and if they are not the same, the meaning of being truly established is not complete. The way the parts and the whole appear and the way they abide are not the same, for example, the pot and its own parts, although the way they abide is the same entity, when they appear to the mind, they appear as different entities. The latter is established, because in the sense consciousness that apprehends the pot, the parts of the pot such as the spout, bottom, belly, neck, etc., appear separately. Because the pot itself abides as one whole. The same applies to the conceptual thought that apprehends the pot. The parts and the whole are one entity, because the parts are related to that whole as one self. Just as the spout, bottom, etc., of the pot are related to the pot as one self. If one understands this, one can be certain that the appearance there and the emptiness of it are a collection of falsities, and therefore one can also be certain like an illusion. This sign of being separate from one is a pervasive non-apprehension sign. The two signs of having parts and dependent arising are valid signs that are apprehended as the opposite of establishing the sprout as being without inherent existence. In the case of the Svātantrika, although there are also signs of dependent arising and the Vajra Splinter reasoning, etc., because it is feared that they are too numerous, a brief explanation of their differences will be given in the case of the Prāsaṅgika. Relying on the similar example of an image to ascertain selflessness.

The method is: Although the image of a face appears as a face, it is easy to ascertain that it is not established as it appears. Once that is ascertained, just like that example, like a sprout, although it appears to be true in our minds, we must ascertain that it is not established as it appears. Thus, even if a determination of selflessness of phenomena according to the Svatantrika system arises, it is said to be supreme, what need is there to mention meditation? If someone is arrogant, thinking they understand the view of the Madhyamaka Svatantrika system, then be sure to ascertain the points mentioned above, and do not let them become mere words. Second, regarding the Prasangika system, there are two points: establishing its view and explaining how to cut off wrong paths. First, this school must understand how phenomena are established by the power of conceptual thought. If that is understood, then phenomena are established as merely imputed by conceptual thought. If that is established, then one understands that there are no phenomena that are not merely imputed by conceptual thought. Thus, being established as a way of abiding that is not merely imputed by conceptual thought is the ultimate limit of what is to be refuted. Connected with that are existence that is not established dependently, inherent existence, existence from its own side, existence by its own characteristics, and true existence, which are all the same in meaning. Regarding the way of establishing by conceptual thought, the commentary on Chandrakirti's Four Hundred Verses says: 'Existence exists only when conceptual thought exists, and existence does not exist when conceptual thought does not exist. Just like a snake imputed to a coiled rope without distinguishing it, it is certain that it is not established by its own nature.' As it is said, all phenomena are established as merely imputed by conceptual thought. That is, when the color and shape are mottled, resembling the way a snake coils, and when the place is unclear, the conceptual thought arises: 'This is a snake.' At that time, none of the color, shape, parts, or continuity of the rope can be taken as the basis for a snake. However, the mere imputation of a snake by conceptual thought does exist. Similarly, when the thought 'I' arises on top of one's own aggregates, none of the continuity, parts, or shapes of the aggregates can be established as 'I.' However, the mere 'I' imputed by conceptual thought exists conventionally. As Aryadeva said in the Garland of Jewels: 'A person is not earth, not water, not fire, not wind, not space, not consciousness, not all, apart from this,'
