Moreover, there are differences in how months are established. Furthermore, it is said that there are customs of considering the beginning of the year from the eighth, ninth, and twelfth months of the Mongolian calendar. I will not mention it here. Fifth, regarding the time when fasting and other observances occur, there are three parts: the time of fasting, the summer retreat, and the end of restrictions. The first part has two aspects: common norms and individual norms. The first aspect has two points: meaning and classification. The first point is: Abstaining from evil and increasing virtue is called fasting. As it says in the Vinaya Sutra: "It truly increases all virtues, and truly eliminates all sins here. For the sake of increasing virtue and eliminating sins, the Tathagata proclaimed fasting." Just as the scripture says. The second point is: Generally, there are seven types of fasting, namely, calming fasting, harmonious fasting, fourteenth fasting, fifteenth fasting, fasting to avert harm, fasting to avert disputes, and auspicious fasting. There are six fourteenth fasts and eighteen fifteenth fasts in a year, totaling twenty-four. If there is a leap month, there will be twenty-six. Second, if we summarize these fasts, they can be summarized into two types of fasts: calming and harmonious. Therefore, the fourteenth and fifteenth fasts also belong to the harmonious fast. Here, the time when these two fasts occur will be generally explained, as well as specifically explained. First, if you ask in which months these twenty-four fasts occur? Answer: Yes. There are twelve months in a year, and there is one fast on each waxing and waning moon of each month. Among them, there are twelve days on the waxing moon and six days on the waning moon, totaling eighteen days of fasting that can be spent overnight. The six days of the waning moon are the fourteenth fasts that cannot be spent overnight. As it says in the Sakya calendar: "Sakya and Upper Water, as well as Lower Water, Revati, Pleiades, and, Enclosure and Dhanistha are called. These six are said on the fourteenth day of the waning moon. Likewise, other than these, eighteen are thought of in the fifteenth place." Just as the scripture says. The second part has five points: meaning, when, which month, the reason for this occurrence, and the method of abolishing and remedying. The first point is: Because the date cannot meet the needs of a day, the fasting that arises is a fasting that cannot be spent overnight.

It is called "cleansing" because it is performed on the fourteenth day, so it is the fourteenth day. The reason will be explained later. Second, according to the Vinaya and Abhidharma, the first and second halves of winter, the first and second halves of spring, and the first and second halves of summer, these six seasons, each with two months, when two and a half months have passed and one and a half months remain, a "day that cannot be endured" occurs. As it says in the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha, "In winter, spring, and summer, two and a half months have passed, and half a month remains, the wise should abandon the day that cannot be endured." Third, regarding in which month it occurs, it says in the Year Question, "Gyal, Wo, Saga, and, Chung upper, Chung lower, Minru, etc., these are all the dark side, half-month cleansing day fourteenth." Just like it is said. Where these cleansing days occur, it is easy to understand if combined with the Mongolian calendar. That is, the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, eleventh, and the lower half of the sixth months of the Mongolian calendar are the times when the fourteenth cleansing day occurs, and the other months are the times when the fifteenth occurs. Fourth, roughly calculating, one date has fifty-nine hours, and one day has sixty hours. Assuming that the date and the day start at the same time, then when one day has passed, one date has passed, and one hour has passed on the second date. In this way, it is added every day, and when fifty-nine days have passed, fifty-nine dates have passed, and fifty-nine hours have passed, so sixty dates have passed, and two date months have ended. However, to make two date months end, one more day is needed. Therefore, the fourteenth cleansing day is the fifteenth day relative to the date, but it is the fourteenth day relative to the day. Therefore, the Root Sutra says, "Cleansing should be done, on the fifteenth day of half-month halves." That is what it means. These are also all calculated from the day after the previous cleansing day was done. If the time is wrong, then there is no certainty. Fifth, there is a reason for the occurrence of intercalary months. Because between the date and the day, an intercalary month is added every five years; between the date and the constellation, an intercalary month is added every two years and nine and a half months, there are two ways.
