Each of the six, upper summer and lower summer, has two months each. The names are: the four months of Mgo, rGyal, mChu, and dBo are the months of winter when divided into three seasons; the four months of Nag pa, Sa ga, sGron, and Chu stod are the months of spring; the four months of Gro bzhin, Khrums tha, sKar, and sMin drug are the months of summer. When divided into four seasons, the three, Mgo, etc., are the first, middle, and last three winter months; the three, dBo, etc., are the spring months; the three, sNron, etc., are the summer months; the three, Khrums, etc., are the first, middle, and last three autumn months. When divided into five, the four, Mgo, etc., are winter, and the four, Nag pa, etc., are the spring season; Gro bzhin is just the summer season; the first day of the dark half of the Khrums month is the short summer season; the three, Khrums, etc., which are less than one month, are the long summer season. When divided into six, the two, Mgo and rGyal, are the months of early winter, and the two, Tha skar and sMin drug, are the months of late summer. From where are these shown? From the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: "The second month of summer..." etc., and from the Root Sutra [Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya]: "These are five..." etc., it is explained. The purpose is: dividing the seasons into three is to know the clothes in the fly-whisk; dividing into four is to accord with worldly terms; dividing into five is to know the short summer; dividing into six is to know the time that is less than a month. Are there differences of real and imputed in these seasons? Some scholars make distinctions of real and imputed, but according to our own system, all of these are the characteristics of seasons. Although it is like that when seasons are divided extensively, all are included within the divisions of three and four. Are these contradictory or not? There are contradictions internally, but generally they are not contradictory, because the first spring month, dBo month, when divided into four seasons, is the fourth winter month when divided into three seasons. However, autumn and spring are contradictory, because these two do not have a common basis. Fourth, there is a method of determining from where to start the year. When based on the Vinaya, Abhidharma, and the old Chinese calendar, the beginning of the seasons comes from winter, so the beginning of the year also occurs in winter. Whichever season is taken as the basis, it is winter itself.

Because this is the initial reason. Here, there are two ways of reckoning: starting from the waxing moon and starting from the waning moon. Worldly people, Mongolian calendar calculators, and Chinese calendar calculators prioritize the waxing moon. The Vinaya and Abhidharma traditions prioritize the waning moon, while the Kalachakra tradition has both methods. Just as the moon increases during the waxing phase and decreases during the waning phase, for worldly people, initially, body, possessions, etc., seem to increase, but eventually, they will decrease. Therefore, the waxing moon is prioritized initially. For renunciants, initially, practicing Dharma seems difficult, but eventually, merit increases. To align with this interdependence, the waning moon is prioritized initially. The first month of winter is reckoned from the head month. As the 'Treasury of Words' says, 'Called 'Smalpo' is the beginning of the year.' Because it is said so. If following the common worldly reckoning, it is reckoned from the 16th of the tenth Mongolian month. The month from then until the 15th of the eleventh month is the same basis for the head month and the first winter month according to the Vinaya and Abhidharma traditions. If prioritizing the waxing moon, then the period from the first day of the waxing moon to the fifteenth day of the waning moon of the tenth Mongolian month is mainly considered the first winter month and the Pleiades month. However, the old Black Calculation and Kalachakra calculators consider the eleventh Mongolian month as the first winter month and the Tiger month, starting the beginning of winter from the first day of its waxing moon. But the Kalachakra calculators, if calculated precisely, reckon the beginning of the first winter month when the sun reaches Sagittarius, and the beginning of the year is reckoned from the third Mongolian month, that is, from when the sun reaches Aries. The old Chinese calendar considers the first winter month as the beginning of the year, while the new Chinese calendar tradition, the science of medicine, the tradition of the Mongolian kings, and the current common worldly view, consider the intercalary month as the first spring month and the Tiger month to reckon the beginning of the year. According to the Vinaya tradition, the end of the fifteenth of the tenth Mongolian month is the completion of the last autumn month and the Pleiades month. As the 'Heart of the Sun Sutra' says, 'I speak of the Pleiades star, the moon becomes full like a full moon, called the last autumn month, this is an excellent declaration.' Because it is said so. Therefore, due to the priority of the waxing and waning moons
