Homage to glorious Mañjughoṣa. To the feet of the all-powerful Lord of Sages, Kālacakra, I bow, who directly perceives and teaches all knowable phenomena of the three times, and the state of all containers and contents, and is the supreme refuge. All the teachings spoken by the Victorious One, beginning with years, months, and days, do not go beyond the system of establishing time. Here, I will explain that system. Although the system of time is explained in many scriptures and commentaries, there appear to be many differences in how it is taught in the scriptures, the differences between philosophical schools, and the views of many early and later scholars. Here, setting aside refutation, establishment, and neutrality regarding these, I will explain a system that is neither primarily based on the Vinaya and Abhidharma alone, but is a system of our own tradition that is appropriate in its elaboration and brevity. This has seven parts: How years, months, and days are established; the system of years, months, and days; the system of intercalary time; how to determine the beginning of the year based on time; the time when Uposatha, summer retreat, etc., occur; the meaning derived from these; and the necessity of being learned. First, in general, one ultimate moment of time is the shortest duration of time. According to the Vinaya and the Abhidharma of the Agamas, each part of a duration of time in which one cymbal is struck, divided into sixty-four parts, is considered to be one ultimate moment of time. According to the Abhidharma of Reasoning, as stated in the Pramāṇavārttika: \"The smallest time of a particle's movement, is considered to be the ultimate moment.\" Thus, the duration of time in which one subtle particle moves from one place to another is considered to be the ultimate moment of time. One hundred and twenty such ultimate moments of time is one kṣaṇa. Sixty of these is one thanga. Thirty of these is one yudtsam. Thirty of these is one day and night. Thirty of these is one month. Twelve of these is considered to be a year. As stated in the Abhidharmakośa: \"One hundred and twenty kṣaṇas, is one kṣaṇa of that. Sixty of those is one thanga. Yudtsam, day and night, and month, increase by thirty from above to above. Twelve months, including the incomplete day, is\"" } ] ============================================================
