One should meditate by focusing on all beings. Otherwise, it will turn into biased generation, etc. The loving-kindness that wishes sentient beings to have happiness and the compassion that wishes them to be free from suffering are also present in Hearers and Solitary Realizers. However, the loving-kindness that wishes to establish all sentient beings in happiness and the great compassion that wishes to save them from suffering are not present in them and become the special characteristics of the Great Vehicle. Therefore, we meditate in this way here. In general, the measure of the perfection of the two, loving-kindness and compassion, is the measure of the arising of such loving-kindness and compassion again. For example, the extent to which a mother focuses on her only child, wishing to place them in happiness and wishing to save them from suffering, is the extent to which, no matter which sentient being is focused on, the thought of wishing to place them in happiness and wishing to save them from suffering arises naturally. This is the perfection of the two, loving-kindness and compassion, as previously explained. Moreover, due to necessity, it is possible to cause slight harm to some sentient beings or to temporarily leave them in equanimity. However, in general, it is not permissible to abandon the act of making that sentient being the object of loving-kindness and compassion. When a mother sees her child tormented by suffering, she feels love that turns into suffering herself. However, this does not happen to Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas. If it did, Buddhas would also be subject to suffering. Therefore, one must clearly distinguish the meaning of the statement that one must generate loving-kindness and compassion towards other sentient beings to the same extent that a mother feels love for her only child, and not be attached to the mere words. The third is higher intention. As a result of meditating on the two, loving-kindness and compassion, one thinks and says repeatedly from the bottom of one's heart, "Alas, may all these sentient beings have all happiness and be liberated from all suffering. I must definitely do it. May I be able to do it," and trains in this way. The second is training the mind in seeking enlightenment. Not only is it necessary to attain perfect enlightenment for the sake of others, but it is also indispensable for one's own sake. Having gained certainty about this, one should remember the qualities of the Buddha and generate a firm mind, thinking, "I must attain such a state of Buddhahood." The second is the lineage from the bodhisattva Shantideva.

The method of training through exchanging self and others, as stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "If one does not genuinely exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not only fail to attain Buddhahood, but will also have no happiness even in samsara." And so on. To summarize the method of training, it should be done as follows: Thinking of all sentient beings as being as kind as mothers, etc., as before. Whether the kindness is great or small, it is supreme. From one's own perspective, as stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Sentient beings and the Victorious Ones are alike in that they can accomplish the Dharma of Buddhahood. Why not show the same respect to sentient beings as to the Buddhas?" In general, if one wishes to attain qualities, and especially Buddhahood, one must benefit sentient beings. To do this, one should prevent oneself from cherishing oneself as much as possible, and cultivate cherishing others as much as possible, thereby firmly resolving to generate Bodhicitta. When exhaling air from the right nostril, visualize all of one's own happiness and virtue riding on the wind, transforming into white light, and entering the left nostrils of all sentient beings, filling their entire bodies with happiness and virtue. When inhaling air from the left nostril, visualize all the suffering of sentient beings and its cause—afflictions—transforming into black light, riding on the wind, being drawn in from their right nostrils, and entering one's own left nostril, forming a black lump in one's heart. Repeatedly contemplate this from the depths of one's heart, practicing giving and taking. As Panchen Rinpoche said, "The magical power of giving and taking rides on the wind." And so on, the meaning of which is also like that. Whichever of these two methods one practices, if one can master them, there is no difference in generating Bodhicitta. For some types of trainees, the former method is easier to practice, while for others, the latter method is easier to practice. Seventh, the measure of generation: As mentioned earlier in the explanation of the essence, and as stated in the Stages of Meditation: "Thus, through the power of familiarizing oneself with great compassion, having vowed to liberate all sentient beings without exception, the Bodhicitta of aspiration, which is the nature of aspiring to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, arises naturally without needing to be forced." The meaning of this is the stages of the path.
