arise, and the support of the mind is: it arises depending on faith and loving-kindness, compassion, etc. Third, depending on what causes and conditions does it arise? Generally, it arises from four causes, four conditions, and four powers. The four causes are: having a perfect lineage, relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, having great compassion for sentient beings, and not being discouraged by the hardships of samsara for the sake of sentient beings. The four conditions are: seeing or hearing the miracles of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, hearing the Mahayana scriptures, being unable to tolerate the decline of the Mahayana Dharma, and thinking that it is difficult to generate Bodhicitta in the degenerate age. The four powers are: wanting to attain perfect enlightenment through one's own power is self-power, wanting to attain it through the power of others is other-power, having been accustomed to the Mahayana in the past, and now hearing the praise of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and generating faith is the power of cause, and having long been accustomed to virtue in the past is the power of application. It arises depending on these various circumstances. The great significance of summarizing the meaning is: to benefit immeasurable sentient beings, to learn all the practices of the Bodhisattvas, and to accomplish immeasurable Dharmas of the Buddhas. If one repeatedly thinks and aspires in this way, that mind will become an excellent cause for the arising of Bodhicitta. Furthermore, to accumulate merit and purify obscurations as a cause for its arising, and especially to purify obscurations through the seven-point cause and effect instruction, and to purify obscurations through the method of exchanging self and others, are also causes and conditions for the arising of Bodhicitta. However, the main cause for the arising of this is: the great compassion of wanting to protect sentient beings from suffering, because even if all other causes and conditions are complete, this is definitely necessary. Fourth, the nature is: as it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "Bodhicitta is for the sake of others, wanting perfect enlightenment." As it is said, it arises from the intention to benefit others, which is the desire for true and perfect enlightenment for the sake of others, which becomes the cause of oneself, and it is the same as the intention to seek perfect enlightenment for one's own sake, which becomes one's own companion, and that special consciousness of the main Mahayana mind, which abides in the lineage of the entrance to the Mahayana path, is the characteristic or nature of the Mahayana Bodhicitta.

Seeking benefit means: being motivated by love and compassion, etc., towards sentient beings, and seeking perfect enlightenment for their benefit. Seeking perfect enlightenment means: also seeking perfect enlightenment for one's own benefit. The characteristic of perfect Mahayana bodhicitta is that both of these must be present; neither one alone is sufficient. As stated in the Lamrim: A perfect bodhicitta is not merely the desire to attain Buddhahood motivated by seeing the necessity to benefit others; it also requires seeing the necessity of attaining Buddhahood for one's own benefit. Moreover, this is not setting aside the benefit of others, but also needing to seek benefit for the sake of others. Fifth, from the perspective of essence, there are two types: aspirational bodhicitta and engaging bodhicitta. The difference between these two is: The Stages of Meditation states: Initially wanting to become a Buddha who benefits all beings, that is aspirational bodhicitta. Afterwards, taking vows and entering the accumulations, that is engaging bodhicitta. As stated in the Lamrim: Whether or not one learns generosity and other practices, as long as one has not taken vows, it is aspirational bodhicitta. From the moment one takes vows, that mind should be understood as engaging bodhicitta. There are many different views on this, but if we summarize the views of Je Tsongkhapa and his sons, aspirational bodhicitta is: a state that does not need to rely on actual practice, whether or not one has taken vows. Engaging bodhicitta is: needing to have obtained the engaging vows and needing to rely on actual practice. Regarding the boundaries of the grounds: there are many ways of saying that aspirational bodhicitta exists from the path of accumulation up to the point of not attaining a ground, and up to the seventh ground. Engaging bodhicitta exists from the path of accumulation up to the ground of Buddhahood. There are also many other ways of classifying it. Sixth, there are two stages of training: the method transmitted from Atisha, and the method transmitted from Shantideva. The first is: the seven instructions of cause and effect, bodhicitta is: higher intention, then compassion, then love, then gratitude, then repaying kindness.
