Remembering kindness. This comes from recognizing sentient beings as mothers. As mentioned earlier, there are many causes and conditions for generating Bodhicitta, but the main one is compassion associated with loving-kindness. This generally arises from repeatedly contemplating how other sentient beings are tormented by suffering. However, for it to arise strongly and very firmly, one must first regard that sentient being as having a pleasing appearance. This is achieved by familiarizing oneself with recognizing all sentient beings as mothers and remembering their kindness, etc. To summarize these, they can be categorized into two: training the mind in seeking the welfare of others and training the mind in seeking enlightenment. The first has two aspects: the basis for generating that mind and the actual method of generating it. The first includes equanimity and regarding sentient beings as having a pleasing appearance. First, in order to generate impartial loving-kindness and compassion, one must first cultivate equanimity. Otherwise, whichever of the two arises will become biased. That equanimity should be cultivated first towards a neutral person, then towards an enemy, and then towards other sentient beings. The method of cultivation is: from the perspective of sentient beings, they all do not want suffering and only want happiness. Therefore, one should not have extreme attachment or hatred towards them. From one's own perspective, there is no sentient being who has not been one's mother, so one should not be attached to some and hate others. Thinking that the basis for the arising of attachment and hatred is uncertain: no matter how dear a friend is, if they have caused great harm to you, or you have caused great harm to them, whether to oneself or others, hatred will arise. No matter how hateful an enemy is, if you have given them great help, or they have given you great help, then, whether to oneself or others, the mind of hatred will change and a mind like loving-kindness will arise. Therefore, repeatedly thinking that one cannot completely trust enemies and friends will reverse anger and attachment, and equanimity will arise. Second, establishing sentient beings as having a pleasing appearance includes three aspects: recognizing all sentient beings as mothers, remembering their kindness, and repaying their kindness. First, from beginningless time, there is no body that has not been taken in samsara, so this sentient being must have been one's mother before.

Also, think that there is no such thing as 'becoming'. Second, remembering kindness: Thinking that those (beings) having become mothers, just like the present mother, have bestowed benefits, and it is certain that they have bestowed benefits through the two ways of thought and action, so their kindness is great. Think like that. Third, repaying kindness: If one abandons such a kind person, then one is a degenerate, so one should never abandon them. Thinking like that, take on the burden of repaying their kindness. If you do that, then love will arise, a delightful aspect of seeing all sentient beings as beloved children. Second, the actual generation of the mind of seeking the benefit of others has three aspects: cultivating love, compassion, and higher intention. First, love: The object is sentient beings, and the aspect is that sentient beings have the aspect of wanting to have happiness, so if all sentient beings were to have happiness, how wonderful that would be! May they have happiness! I shall make them have happiness! Think and recite that again and again. Its benefit is, as it says in the Samadhiraja Sutra: In hundreds of thousands of billions of lands, with countless various offerings, constantly offering to the noble ones, one cannot match the number of thoughts of love. Also, the Protector Nagarjuna said: Even if one gives three hundred kinds of food three times a day, one cannot match the merit of a moment of love. One should remember that. Second, compassion: The object is sentient beings, and the aspect is that sentient beings have the aspect of wanting to be free from suffering, so if all sentient beings were to be free from suffering, how wonderful that would be! May they be free from suffering! I shall make them be free from suffering! Think and recite that again and again. The benefit is, as it says in the Sutra: World-Honored One, if a Bodhisattva perfectly grasps and perfectly understands one dharma, then all the Buddha's dharmas are in the palm of his hand. What is that one dharma? It is great compassion. And so on, it speaks of immeasurable benefits. Furthermore, one should also think that great compassion is the root of the Great Vehicle path, and that it is important in the beginning, middle, and end, and so on. The order of cultivating love and compassion is: first towards relatives and friends, then towards neutral people, and then towards enemies, cultivating in that way is similar. If one becomes accustomed to that, then towards sentient beings.
