Oṃ. This exemplifies the distinctions of a Bodhisattva's conduct. Understand what is taught in the sutras and learn as much as possible. Furthermore, I will briefly explain the differences between Śamatha (tranquility) and Vipaśyanā (insight). The essence of Śamatha is meditation; the mind is one-pointed. Moreover, by means of conduct that is in accordance with the precepts, focus on the image of the Victorious One, beautiful as gold, and thus cultivate Śamatha, free from the faults of sinking and excitement, etc. Thus it is said. At that time, one should not be lazy, forget the instructions, and not generate mental activities of sinking and excitement. Having abandoned the five faults, rely on faith, aspiration, effort, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity as the eight antidotes. As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga (Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes). Placing and continuous placing, repeated placing and close placing, taming and pacifying, completely pacifying and one-pointedness, equanimity and continuous one-pointedness. As stated, the nine ways of abiding the mind, the power of hearing and thinking, mindfulness and awareness, diligence and the power of familiarity, or, applying with effort and applying intermittently, applying without interruption, and the four mental engagements of applying without effort. Properly rely on these and cultivate Śamatha. When the ultimate pliancy of mind and body arises, and the mind naturally and steadily abides on a single object, then it is said that Śamatha is attained. Before cultivating the view, one should first practice Guru Yoga, etc., and rely on reasoning that examines the ultimate meaning, such as the reasoning of dependent origination, to seek the view. Here, if I briefly explain the reasoning of separation from one and many, there are four key points here. First, the key point of determining what is to be refuted. For us, the thought that there is a self, this mind that holds onto the heart, in what way, how, and what does it grasp as the self? When examined in this way, it will be seen that on each of the body and mind, it is not just a single one, but on this aggregate of body and mind, it is not just a nominal designation, but it believes that on the object, there exists a self that is independent and self-sufficient, not relying on others. Second, the key point of determining pervasion. The self that is established as being grasped in this way, is it one with this body and mind, or is it established as being separate?

Any one. Know that it is not otherwise. Third, the singleness apart from truth is: That I, which is grasped by the innate clinging to truth, Is it one with or different from these two, body and mind? If you say it is one, then I myself would also become both body and mind. If it were one with the body, then I myself would become form, and When saying "my body," I am different from the body, When speaking, the mind also perceives it as different, It does not appear as one. If it were one, when the body is destroyed, When I myself take rebirth, The body would also have to take rebirth, But that is not seen by anyone. Therefore, it is not established as one with the body. It is also not one with the mind, When saying "my mind," Both I and mind appear as different, It is impossible to appear as one. Even if it appears, I myself would become consciousness. If it is consciousness, then with eye consciousness, With limbs and form, Have you not seen me? Fourth, the multiplicity apart from truth is: If, as grasped by the clinging to self, That I is unrelated to both body and mind, and is independent, Then, after the body and mind have been separately eliminated, Can you point out such an I? Since there is no independent I apart from body and mind, Therefore, such independence is not established. Furthermore, as it is said: The person is not the flesh, bones, skin, blood, pus of his own body, Not warmth, breath, orifices, and various consciousnesses, Nor is it other than that, The person is not earth, not water, Not fire, not wind, not space, Not consciousness, if not all, Then other than that, what is the person? Furthermore, the innate clinging to self, Is not merely labeling the five limbs as body, But from the object, it is grasped as something solid and real, One should examine and recognize the object to be refuted. Then, if the body thus grasped exists on the aggregation of the four great elements, Then are the five limbs of this body One or different? This is the key to deciding universality. If it is one, then the entire body Becomes five limbs, Therefore, the head also has feet and hands. Therefore, each limb Is a complete body, Or there is also a body that is the common basis of the five limbs. Therefore, it is one
