It abides in the state of "Dapa," and it is also said to abide in the asceticism of Heruka. Such asceticism, because it is the most excellent of all other asceticisms, is called "great." By abiding in celibacy, abandoning non-celibate conduct in the manner of a renunciate, therefore, the asceticism of celibacy is the most excellent of all other asceticisms. All austerities, such as patience, are perfected, abiding in the great asceticism that transcends the world. Here, just as the teacher Shakyamuni showed six years of asceticism, the venerable one (Milarepa) also showed asceticism to benefit sentient beings. When external conduct is pure and the internal continuum of afflictions is purified, it is called "pure abode." Through it, he is called "Gautama," that is, the supreme of the lineage, the same as Shakyamuni Buddha. Abiding in inner and outer purity, therefore he is a Brahmin. Having abandoned afflictions, therefore he is Brahma; having abandoned the obscurations to knowledge, therefore he is the Great Brahma. Having directly known the nature of these two, one attains such nirvana, which is the ultimate Brahma. There are many different explanations for these passages. Some say that Brahma is the king of gods, transforming into Brahma to benefit sentient beings; some say that because he knows the realm of phenomena, he is Brahma; because he knows non-dual wisdom, he is the Great Brahma. Some explain as before, and so on, there are many explanations. Those are also not contradictory to the meaning here. Otherwise, those Panchens would also have the fault of explaining arbitrarily. One obtains the body of liberation, that is, the Dharmakaya, which is liberated from the bonds of samsara and freed from the obscurations to knowledge. Such liberation, because there is fire at the edge of existence, is peace, and because it does not abide at the edge of peace, it is the nature of peace. Or, the first peace is the pacification of the elaboration of true existence, and the second peace is the pacification of the elaboration of conceptual grasping. Or, the first is the pacification of karma and afflictions, and the latter is the pacification of the imprints of ignorance. It is explained in that way. The nirvana of the Shravakas who have abandoned afflictions is peace, and there is also the nirvana of the Pratyekabuddhas, and the nirvana of the Sugatas, the nirvana of the Bodhisattvas close to the Dharmakaya of the Buddhas. Those are merely the abandonment of afflictions, it is the place of all beings.

Accomplishing all happiness, both temporal and ultimate, and completely pacifying all suffering, is Buddhahood itself. The Dharmakaya of the Buddha, who has transcended the inferior body of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas dwelling in detachment, as just mentioned, is: invincible because harm cannot overcome it; incomparable because it depicts the state as it is; invisible because it is profound; imperceptible because it is not an object of sensory consciousness; and naturally luminous, not dependent on other conditions for its manifestation. Furthermore, as it is said, "The Dharmakaya is emptiness, it is indivisible," it has no directional distinctions like tangible things; as it is said, "unchanging," it abides because its essence is immutable. Like the sky, it moves and pervades in a way that encompasses everything; it is subtle because it is difficult to comprehend; it is without the leakage of seeds of ignorance and so on; because its own essence is not tainted, it is without dust, and is naturally pure; it is endowed with adventitious purity because it is free from adventitious stains and impurities; it has abandoned the faults of adventitious stains, namely afflictions; and it is without the defects of the obscuration of knowledge. With the wisdom that has awakened from the sleep of ignorance of the two obscurations, it directly sees all knowable things, and is therefore of the nature of awakening. That wisdom knows all things as they are and as many as they are, and is the noble one, that is, the supreme one. That wisdom transcends not only external phenomena, but also the belief in the truth of the nature of internal consciousness, and thus expounds the principle of ultimate non-dual wisdom. The activity of that wisdom itself is non-conceptual, arising spontaneously without effort. The Buddhas of the past, future, and present also benefit sentient beings with such activity. In some Indian commentaries, the venerable one explains that the activity of all the Buddhas of the three times is carried out, while others say that the activity of the Buddhas arises continuously in the three times from the self-cause of the wisdom Dharmakaya. The emptiness of the Dharmakaya of the Buddha, because it pervades like the sky, is called without beginning and without end, that is, the nature of the mind of all sentient beings.
