Therefore, regarding the vows and stages of mind training, one should diligently engage in practical application as described in their respective treatises such as "Mind Training," and regard this precious human life of leisure and opportunity as a great matter for achieving ultimate happiness and aspirations. Secondly, there are two ways to learn the actual generation of Bodhicitta: learning the methods of aspirational Bodhicitta and engaged Bodhicitta. First, there are four lines of giving and taking: the skillful means of giving away one's own happiness and taking on the suffering of others. When one's breath flows out from the two nostrils, one blesses it with one's own body, possessions, and virtuous roots, riding upon it and sending it forth. One contemplates that these become the possessions of all sentient beings, endowing them with happiness and perfect enjoyment, and cultivates loving-kindness. Similarly, when the breath enters one's nostrils, one blesses it with all the suffering and unpleasantness of sentient beings, absorbing it into oneself. One contemplates that sentient beings are free from all suffering and its causes, and cultivates compassion. Such a "magic wheel" is like how, in the world, one effortlessly pulls large stones and wood by relying on wooden magic wheels and vehicles. Likewise, relying on the difference of the in-and-out flow of breath, one possesses such a magic wheel-like skillful means. With loving-kindness, compassion, the actual cause of Bodhicitta—the superior intention, and the Bodhicitta like the taste of molasses, in order to liberate those who wander from the great ocean of samsara, may that precious Bodhicitta, as previously described, be perfected and arise in my being. Secondly, the method of learning engaged Bodhicitta is: "The Sugatas of the three times," etc., is one verse: The path of the Sugatas of the three times, that is, their vehicle, is unique. It is not that there is no other way to proceed, but that it is absolutely necessary. The path is like how, in the world, the special foundation of a place to go is called a path. Similarly, the special means of proceeding to the state of Buddhahood is called a path. So, what is such a path? It is the vows of the pure sons of the Buddhas, the Bodhisattvas. The vow

One must diligently guard and protect their own discipline. The methods of upholding discipline, etc., should be studied in the "Bodhicharyavatara" and in the "Explanation of the Chapter on Bodhisattva Morality" composed by the venerable one himself. Moreover, the three disciplines of the supreme vehicle, namely, the Pratimoksha of a Bodhisattva, which is the discipline of abstaining from misdeeds; the four means of gathering, which is the discipline of benefiting sentient beings; and the practice of the six perfections, which is the discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas—these three, one should diligently and earnestly strive to practice, making them the priority. Second, regarding the method of learning the six perfections: the first of the six, generosity, involves the four aspects of body, etc., that is, one's own body, possessions, and the accumulation of merit from the three times, transforming them into whatever objects each sentient being desires. Generating the mind of freely giving without any attachment of miserliness is the instruction for increasing or multiplying. Even if sentient beings have not actually received them, the desire and aspiration to give to all of them surpasses even a great generosity that is limited. Relying on the power of such instructions, one can perfect the practice of the perfection of generosity. There are also two aspects to "perfection": the path that leads to perfection and the result of perfection. Therefore, some argue that since the Prajnaparamita is only that which has already been crossed over, it does not exist on the path of learning. However, the venerable father and son distinguish between that which leads to crossing over and that which has already crossed over, and they assert that the former exists there. Second, discipline involves the four aspects of Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, etc., that is, whether one has taken the Pratimoksha vows, the Bodhisattva vows, or the secret mantra vows—any one of these three vows, or all three—one must protect the precepts of each, all the subtle and gross boundaries established by the Buddha himself through prohibitions, approvals, and allowances. Even for the sake of one's life, one should not abandon them; needless to say, one would not abandon them for trivial reasons, and one should guard them. The discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas includes generosity, etc., and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings includes the practice of the four means of gathering.
