And thus it arises. This is an ornament of form, and if we explain the analogy a little: Samsara is likened to the ocean, karma and afflictions are likened to waves, the three sufferings are likened to aquatic creatures, and the inability to determine that samsara will end here is likened to the inability of ordinary people to measure the edge and depth of the ocean. Second, the means of desiring liberation are the four lines such as "difficult to endure." Being tormented by suffering is extremely difficult to endure. For example, this samsara, which is like a prison where criminals enter, due to the power of our mistaken habits, we see the place of happiness as a delightful garden. Abandoning this perverse evil thought, we must properly maintain the three trainings, such as the training in higher morality, and the treasures of the noble ones, such as faith, morality, learning, generosity, wisdom, shame, and conscientiousness. For example, when the gods triumph over the Asuras, they raise the victory banner as a sign of that. Similarly, we must raise the banner of liberation that triumphs over the adverse conditions of karma and afflictions. Second, the actual practice of cultivating the Mahayana path is twofold: the way to train in bodhicitta and the way to train in the six perfections. The first also has two parts: the way to train in the development of bodhicitta and the way to train in actual bodhicitta. The first has four parts: the way to train in exchanging self and others, the way to transform adverse conditions into the path, the way to transform whatever appears into the cause of bodhicitta with the five powers, and the way to combine temporary conditions into practice with the four combinations. The first has five parts: the way to meditate on recognizing others as mothers, the way to prevent self-cherishing, the way to view cherishing others as a virtue, the way to exchange self and others equally, and the actual exchange of self and others. The first is: "Pitiful" etc., two verses. All beings, equal to the sky, who are tormented by suffering and deprived of happiness, are in a pitiful state, are all my mothers. The reasons for this should be understood from other scriptures. In short, apart from the fact that we transmigrate through birth and death and cannot recognize them, they have repeatedly been my mothers in previous lives, and we should think well of the way they have cared for me with kindness. For example, just as a loving mother would want to free her beloved only child from suffering and place them in happiness, we should regard them as our mothers, not just pretending in our minds, but truly regarding them as our mothers.

May a strong compassion arise, thinking that these wretched beings should be freed from suffering. All beings who have been mothers do not want even the slightest suffering, and they are all the same in that they never know satisfaction in wanting to experience happiness. Know well that there is no difference between oneself and other beings. May a loving-kindness arise, wishing that other beings may have happiness and the causes of happiness, and may a special joy arise, wishing that they may never be separated from happiness. The former is compassion, and the latter shows loving-kindness and joy. Exchanging self and others shows equanimity. Second, the way to stop self-cherishing by seeing its faults is the four lines beginning with cherishing oneself. The mind that cherishes oneself while abandoning other beings is like a chronic disease that, although the symptoms are not severe, gradually threatens life. A chronic disease does not cause great oppression immediately, but eventually becomes the root of suffering, so it is like a chronic disease. Seeing that this bad mind is the cause of suffering such as birth, old age, sickness, and death, one should regard it as an enemy, thinking that this enemy has caused me to suffer unimaginable suffering in the past, and now I will take revenge and trace the root of samsara. May I be able to quickly destroy this great demon of cherishing only myself. Third, the way to view cherishing others as a virtue is the four lines beginning with cherishing mothers. If cherishing oneself becomes a fault, then who should be cherished? One should generate the mind of cherishing all mother sentient beings, wishing to place them in happiness. And one should see that this mind is the source of the door through which limitless qualities arise. Thinking about this reason, even if all these old mother sentient beings were to rise up as enemies against me, one should think that they are controlled by afflictions and are pitiful. Even if I die, it doesn't matter, I will cherish all mother sentient beings more than my own life. Fourth, therefore, self and other are equal.
