How should one practice? As it is said, "Body, time, place, and wind, know these four key points." As stated, the body should be comfortable in any suitable posture, such as the lotus position, keeping the spine straight, and so on. Regarding time, in general, one should practice regularly, especially at dawn, during times of increasing wisdom, and in the evening. Regarding wind, one should balance the inflow and outflow of breath. The key to the place is where to focus attention, which includes the heart, navel, secret place, and the end of the central channel (dhūti), among others. However, in the tradition of Luipa, the initial focus is on the navel. Specifically, directly in front of the navel, close to the spine in the back, visualize the emanation wheel, a chakra with four layers of petals: the first layer has four petals, the second has eight, the third has sixteen, and the fourth has sixty-four petals. In the very center of this chakra, visualize the central channel (uma), which is entwined with knots from the left and right channels, and focus attention inside the central channel. This is the method of practice. Secondly, how should one practice? Inside the central channel, in the center of the bindu where the sun and moon unite, visualize a white and reddish syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:seed syllable Hūṃ), clear and radiant like a pearl smeared with vermillion. Above this syllable, visualize a white and reddish nāda, extremely subtle, like five rays of light burning, with the mind absorbed within it. This is what should be grasped. Thirdly, how should it arise? Having practiced in this way, it is not enough to merely generate non-conceptual awareness free from dullness and agitation. One must cause the breath to dissolve into the central channel, be able to draw forth the four joys, and generate special signs of dissolution. That is, by focusing attention single-pointedly on that place, due to the key point of breath and mind entering the same place, the mind is controlled, and the life-breath reverses from flowing in the left and right channels and enters the central channel. Based on this, kindle the inner heat (tummo) within the central channel, melting the white bindu Haṃ (藏文:ཧཾ,梵文天城体:हं,梵文罗马拟音:haṃ,汉语字面意思:seed syllable Haṃ) at the crown, and gradually descending through the center of the four chakras, the four joys arise in sequence. Therefore, there are unmistakable signs of the breath dissolving into the central channel. After a sustained session, immediately identify the alternating flow of breath in each nostril, and then, before long, the breath will certainly tend to flow equally.
