When monks recited the Buddha's teachings in elegant, common, dialectal, and cannibalistic languages, the disciples dispersed, forming eighteen schools. Because various differing philosophical views disturbed the doctrine, Arhats and learned ordinary people gathered at the Jalandhara monastery to compile the teachings. It is said that three hundred years had passed since the Buddha's Nirvana at that time. The Buddha had prophesied, "One hundred years after my Nirvana, a king named Ashoka will be born in the Mura clan in the city of Shyarnar, and he will build eighty-four thousand stupas of my relics in a single day." This comes from the "White Lotus of Compassion Sutra" and the "Radiant Sutra." Thereafter, King Dharma Ashoka and the Arhats, in order to subdue those who were attached to reciting words in common, dialectal, and intermediate languages, gradually translated the scriptures into different languages, such as the Sutras translated into Sanskrit. Thus, the doctrine was divided into eighteen schools. This seems somewhat contradictory. Some say that in order to dispel doubts about whether the eighteen schools are the Buddha's words, three hundred years after the Buddha's Nirvana, in the Kunbana monastery in the Kashmir region, the patron King Kanika of Jalandhara presided, with five hundred Arhats including Purnika, five hundred Bodhisattvas including Vasumitra, and two hundred fifty or six thousand ordinary pandits gathered to recite orally, thereby confirming all the scriptures of the eighteen schools. The way the schools split: Regarding the way the schools split, Bhabyana says that the root is the Mahasanghika and the Sthavira. Some distinguish and say there are three. The Sarvastivadins say that before the Second Council, there was only the Sarvastivada, and after that, it split into seventeen schools because of reciting in different languages. The split is not the doctrine, because it is not included in the Vinaya, so it is not obvious in the Vinaya Pitaka; because the meanings contradict each other, it is not included in the Sutra Pitaka; because the meanings of the words are different, it is inconsistent with the Dharma nature, so it is not the Buddha's words. But the scriptures of the seventeen schools are the Buddha's words, because they explain the precepts, so they appear in the Vinaya Pitaka; they explain the higher mind, so they are in the Sutra
