He said, 'Because the young man was born in the palace and does not know the arts. My lineage will give my daughter to someone who knows the arts, how can I give her to someone who does not know the arts?' He said this. Repeating these words, the king thought, 'This person has insulted me twice to my face with these words.' After that, the young man heard these words and asked the king what had happened. 'This matter cannot be left unreported.' So the king told the story. After that, the young man agreed to compete in the arts, and the king was very happy, so he announced that there would be a competition in the arts. After that, seven days later, about five hundred young men of the Shakya clan gathered together, and they placed Sā Tsho Ma (Earth Mother) as the victory flag, and they vowed, 'The methods of swords, throwing, and wrestling postures, let the victor take them.' After that, first Devadatta came, and he encountered an elephant being led, and out of jealousy and arrogance, he killed the elephant with a single clap of his hand. After that, Sundarananda threw the elephant aside through the city gate. After that, the Bodhisattva lifted the elephant with his toe and threw it one yojana beyond the seven walls and seven moats, turning it into a large pit, which is known as the Elephant Pit. After that, with the spiritual friends of all the teachers as witnesses, they competed in writing, and the Bodhisattva won. After that, with the Shakya ruler as a witness to calculate, the Bodhisattva won. Even the ruler only knew up to 'Immovable,' while the Bodhisattva knew up to 'Supreme Essence.' After that, in jumping, swimming, and running, the Bodhisattva surpassed them all. After that, Nanda and Upananda, in order to compete in strength, went before him, and as soon as they touched his hand, they fell down. After that, Devadatta stepped forward, and the Bodhisattva lifted him with his right hand, spun him in the air, and threw him to the ground, but without harming his body. After that, all the Shakya youths gathered together, and as soon as the Bodhisattva touched them, they all fell down. After that, they began to compete in throwing, Nanda threw two yojanas, Devadatta threw four yojanas, and Sundarananda threw six yojanas. Vedaingi, at a distance of two krosas, each set up an iron drum as a target and hit it. After that...

ended. The Bodhisattva erected an iron drum ten yojanas away. Beside it, seven tala trees were erected. Opposite it, an iron boar was erected. Taking an arrow from the lion's mouth in the temple, he drew it halfway and shot it. The iron drum, the seven tala trees, and the boar were all pierced through. The arrow stuck in the ground and disappeared, forming a well-like shape, hence it was called the Arrow Well. Thereafter, the Bodhisattva became proficient in arithmetic, riding elephants, and even in the blending of incense. He excelled in all arts. Vejancan offered his daughter. The Bodhisattva, in order to conform to the world, consecrated Satso-ma, the best of the eighty-four thousand women, as queen, and enjoyed pleasure with them. Then, some gods and nagas thought, 'If this noble being remains in the retinue of consorts for a long time, the sentient beings who can be vessels will diminish, and he will not manifest.' With reverence, they hoped that he would manifest, become enlightened, and teach the Dharma. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also urged him with verses from the sound of cymbals: 'Seeing sentient beings filled with hundreds of sufferings, become the protector, refuge, and abode of beings, become the benefactor, protector, and friend. You made that aspiration in the past. Virtuous hero, remember your past practices and the aspiration to benefit beings. This is your time and moment, supreme sage, please depart from home.' And so on, they urged. The consorts also spoke of past lives through the sound of music: 'The three realms are ablaze with the suffering of old age and disease, the fire of death blazes fiercely, this is without a protector. Beings are always deluded in samsara, like a bee trapped in a jar. The three realms are impermanent, like autumn clouds. The birth and death of beings are like watching a dance. The life of beings is like lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like a mountain stream.' And so on. Remember your past practices. For beings obscured by the darkness of ignorance and delusion,
