Twelve Deeds. Twelve Deeds. According to the Mahayana tradition, it is said that the Buddhas, after attaining Buddhahood in Akanishta, demonstrate twelve deeds in the desire realm. As stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: "In the desire realm and the formless realm, Buddhas do not manifest enlightenment. In Akanishta of the form realm, you, free from attachment, attain enlightenment." Also, as stated in the Ghanavyuha Sutra: "All Buddhas are in Akanishta. Those who have not become Buddhas are in the desire realm. They do not perform the deeds of a Buddha." Furthermore, in the Uttaratantra, it is said: "The greatly compassionate one knows the world, having gazed upon all the world, without moving from the Dharmakaya, through various natures of emanation, manifests birth, descent from Tushita, entering the womb and being born, being skilled in the arts, delighting and playing in the retinue of consorts, renunciation, practicing austerities, going to the Bodhi tree, destroying the armies of Mara, and perfectly, the wheel of Dharma of Bodhi, and those who pass into Nirvana, in all impure realms, show existence as long as samsara lasts." Thus, the emanation body is explained. In the Pramanavarttika-vrtti, it is also said: "Starting from the Brahmin boy, until the great Nirvana, what is shown is merely an emanation. What is the necessity for this?" In the commentary, it says: "When the Blessed One Light Protector was in the world, the Brahmin boy, abiding in celibacy, was shown to be an emanation. Then, he was born as a white banner in Tushita, and then he was shown as the son of Shuddhodana, Sarvarthasiddhi, residing in the palace, renouncing from the palace, entering into distant journeys, etc., in order to seek the path of Bodhi, gradually becoming a Buddha and turning the wheel of Dharma, and then gradually entering into the great Nirvana. What is shown is merely an emanation." Thus, it appears. Ngawang Drakpa also said: "In the glorious Ghanavyuha itself, understanding the ultimate meaning, for the sake of the beings of Tushita, he became the excellent White Banner. Then, for the sake of beings here, he became the crest jewel of the Shakyas. May he who overcomes the Lord of Death, who shows all illusions, be victorious!" And so on, according to many views, the accumulation of merit is completed.

Having become enlightened in Akanishta from the final existence of the tenth bhumi, initially demonstrating the twelve deeds in the desire realm, all are explained as the deeds of a Buddha. According to the Guhyasamaja system of Shakya Mitra and others, during the time of asceticism, the body of karmic maturation is placed on the bank of the Nairanjana River, and the body of wisdom goes to Akanishta. Having become enlightened in the Sambhogakaya, the wisdom re-enters the body of asceticism, and performs deeds such as going to the Bodhi tree. Therefore, it is believed that below asceticism is a Bodhisattva, and above is a Buddha. The great translator, the incarnate Rinchen Zangpo, also said so in refuting false mantras. The Madhyamika teacher Dharmamitra says that there are two types: one who becomes enlightened in Akanishta and then shows deeds here like Shakyamuni Buddha, and one who shows twelve deeds in the desire realm itself and manifests enlightenment. According to the common vehicle, in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, what is the inconceivable Tathagata? It is the person who, from dwelling in the Tushita heaven until complete nirvana, shows all the practices of a Bodhisattva and also the practices of a Buddha in the desire realm. In its commentary, "all the practices of a Bodhisattva" means from dwelling in the Tushita heaven until conquering the Maras. "The practices of a Buddha" means from manifest enlightenment until the great complete nirvana. Thus, it is explained literally. Here, it should be explained according to the verses of the Uttaratantra. The Brahmin boy, after dying, was reborn in Tushita, named Dam Patok Karpo (Supreme White Banner), and taught the Dharma to the gods. At that time, by the power of his own merit and the blessings of the Buddhas, from the sounds of the music of the gods: "Vast merit, possessing assemblies, mindfulness and understanding, boundless intelligence, wisdom illuminating light, unequaled power, possessing great magical abilities, please remember the prophecy of Dipamkara. O Supreme One, by the glory of your merit, although the Tushita palace is extremely beautiful, yet because you possess a heart of compassion
