Unable to do, abandoned in the forest like a tree. The Bodhisattva said: Is this dharma of this kind? Or is this the case for all beings? Please tell me. Please quickly and truthfully speak these words. Having heard, I will contemplate the meaning here accordingly. He said: This deity is not a dharma of caste, nor is it a custom of the land. The youth of all people is destroyed by old age. Your father, mother, relatives, and friends also cannot escape old age, there is no other way to stop it. The Bodhisattva said: Foolish and ignorant people, because they are young and vigorous and indulge in pleasure, do not see old age. I am going back, quickly turn my chariot. I too will face old age, what is the point of enjoyment? Having said this, he went back inside. Again, going out from the south gate, seeing the sick person, he said: Charioteer, this person is rough in body and has a bad complexion. All senses are weakened and breathing is very difficult. All limbs are withered, the stomach is swollen, and he is very weak. He is sitting in a place where he excretes urine and feces, who is this? He said: O deity, this person is very ill, the fear of illness is near, and he is on the verge of death. He has lost his healthy radiance and his strength has completely declined. He has no protector, savior, refuge, or relatives. The Bodhisattva said: The pleasure of being without illness is also just an illusion in a dream. The fear of illness is so unbearable. How can a wise person, having seen this illness, still generate love and attachment to pleasure? Again, seeing the dead person in the west, he said: Charioteer, who are these people carrying this person on a stretcher, scattering their hair, throwing dirt on their heads, speaking various words, beating their chests, and circling around? He said: O deity, this person has died in Jambudvipa, and will never see his parents and siblings again. He has abandoned his wealth, family, friends, and relatives, and has gone to the next world, and will never see his relatives again. The Bodhisattva said: Youth will be destroyed by old age, what is the use of youth? Health will be destroyed by various diseases, what is the use of health? Life will not last long, what is the use of intelligence?

What is impossible? What is impossible for a wise man who is attached to pleasure? If there were no old age and no death, but even then, clinging to the five aggregates would be a great suffering. Since old age and death always follow, what need is there to say more? It is best to return and think about how to attain liberation. Again, seeing a monk at the north gate, he said: "The charioteer, that man, his mind is peaceful, very peaceful, his eyes are downcast, and he looks only as far as the yoke when walking. He wears ochre robes and behaves very peacefully. He carries a begging bowl and does not seem like an uncivilized wild man. Who is he?" He replied: "O god, this man is called a monk. He has abandoned the pleasures of desire and behaves very tamely. He seeks his own peace and has become a renunciate. He is free from desire and hatred, and he lives by alms." The Bodhisattva said: "This is well said, and I also desire it. Renunciation is always praised by the wise. It benefits oneself and also benefits other beings. Life is happy and harmonious, and it becomes the fruit of immortality." Then the Bodhisattva entered the palace. The king also saw those sights and heard those words. For protection, he built walls, moats, and strong gates. He placed a guard of soldiers at the crossroads of the city and had the consorts sing and play music and enjoy themselves. At that time, signs of the Bodhisattva's renunciation appeared: the birds did not sing, the lotuses withered, the trees did not blossom, the strings of the flutes and lutes broke, and the clay drums and other instruments made no sound when struck. The king also felt uneasy in his heart. The earth goddess also dreamed of earthquakes and other things. In the Bodhisattva's dream, he stirred the ocean with his hands and feet, the earth turned into rain, Mount Meru became a pillow, light dispelled darkness, an umbrella arose from the earth and covered the three realms, four black and white creatures and four colored birds came and became one color, he climbed a mountain of foul excrement but was not defiled, he rescued those who were carried away by water, he healed the sick, and on the side of Mount Meru, he sat on a lion throne, and the gods bowed down to him. Then the Bodhisattva thought: "It is not right to renounce without my father's permission." So he went to his father and said:
