Fourth topic: How the Dharma to be attained arises, which is divided into two: how the Dharma arises in the world in general, and how it arises specifically in Tibet. First, in general, when Bodhisattvas' assemblies or aspirations are fulfilled, the Buddha's field is pure, and the disciples' roots of virtue are ripened, then a Buddha appears and teaches the sacred Dharma. This has three aspects: generally, how Buddhas appear in a particular kalpa; specifically, how Buddhas appear in the Good Kalpa; and specifically, how Thubpa'i Wangpo (Shakyamuni Buddha) appears in this Saha world. First, in general, there are two types of kalpas: the light kalpa and the dark kalpa. Buddhas appear in the light kalpa, but not in the dark kalpa. In the light kalpa, the Good Kalpa, there are one thousand or one thousand and five Buddhas. Then there are sixty great dark kalpas.
