in between. Furthermore, the third asamkhya kalpa is from the immovable ground up to the Buddha ground. Thus it is said. In this way, if Buddhahood is attained by three asamkhya kalpas, does it contradict the sutra of "as it is said"? If someone asks this. Because the three are the same, it is said that it is known by three asamkhya kalpas, but in reality it is not so. Therefore, explaining the sutra of the straight meaning in this way is extremely contradictory. Like this, Vasubandhu said: To perfect all the grounds of accumulation, one asamkhya kalpa must pass. After that, to perfect the ground of practice by faith, two asamkhya kalpas must pass. After that, starting from the Joyful Ground, up to the Dharma Cloud Ground of the Bodhisattva Ground, each also perfects the Bodhisattva Ground with three asamkhya kalpas, and then accomplishes all the light of the Buddha Ground. In this way, Buddhahood is attained by thirty-three asamkhya kalpas, so it is said. In the Extensive Play Sutra, it is said that in seven asamkhya kalpas, all roots of virtue are perfectly cultivated, thus seven are spoken of. Some Shravaka schools believe in ten asamkhya kalpas, and it is said in the Vinaya Miscellaneous Matters that different schools are recited. Therefore, although many systems appear, what is agreed upon and famous by many is what Maitreya said: The ground is considered to be the first. This is with immeasurable kalpas. And, three asamkhyas are complete. The path of meditation is completed. Therefore, it should be explained as three asamkhyas. Moreover, immediately after generating the mind of enlightenment, one does not immediately begin the practice of countless kalpas. As it is said in the Jewel Cloud Sutra: Son of the lineage, the Tathagata is perfectly accomplished by many asamkhya kalpas. Son of the lineage, the Tathagata cannot be measured, cannot be conceived, and cannot be fathomed. The Bodhisattva, completely removing all obstacles, prayed: World Honored One, is it not by three countless kalpas that the Tathagatas are perfectly accomplished? The World Honored One replied: Son of the lineage, why? Because the realm of the Tathagata to be accomplished by the Bodhisattva is inconceivable.

Ah, that cannot be fully accomplished by three countless great kalpas. From the time when a Bodhisattva enters the equality of Dharma-nature, kalpas are to be counted. It is not from the initial arising of the mind. Thus it is said. Therefore, in the Compendium of Mahāyāna it says: "With the power of goodness and aspiration, a steadfast mind, and a particularly progressing one, Bodhisattvas strive constantly for three countless kalpas." In the commentary to this, it says: "Goodness is virtue, and having that power is the one with the power of goodness, because it exists in that. Aspiration, here, is considered to be a vow, and because it exists in that, it is the one with the power of aspiration. Among them, the one with the power of the root of virtue is because it is not overcome by opposing factors. The one with the power of aspiration is because they always meet with virtuous friends. The one with a steadfast mind is because even if non-virtuous friends change their faith, they do not completely abandon the mind of enlightenment. The particularly progressing one is because in the seen Dharma and future lives, virtuous Dharmas increase and do not decline. Thus, when one has the power of the root of virtue and aspiration, and a steadfast mind, that is, not turning back in the intermediate state, and a particularly progressing one, that is, not being satisfied with a little merit, from that time on, they begin to accumulate three countless kalpas." Thus it is said. Some say that the beginning of countless kalpas starts from the path of application, as it says in the Bodhisattva-bhūmi, "The first countless great kalpa is when, having completely transcended abiding in the stage of adhimukti-caryā (practice through conviction), one attains abiding in the stage of pramuditā-bhūmi (the joyous ground)." And in its commentary, it says, "Because of the blazing effort, constantly abiding in the root of virtue, it is shown that countless kalpas are counted from the stage of adhimukti-caryā." They say this. This needs to be examined, because it is said to begin from the stage of adhimukti-caryā, so striving only from the path of application cannot accomplish it, because the Bodhisattva-bhūmi also speaks of adhimukti-caryā up to the initial arising of the mind, and in the commentary to the Compendium of Abhidharma, it also says: "A Bodhisattva in the stage of adhimukti-caryā, from abiding in the lineage, initially making great vows, until not entering the joyous ground, each of their own worlds
