In the waxing moon, one sees it growing moment by moment. Similarly, for those who have entered the levels (bhumi), one sees it growing gradually. Just as on the fifteenth day of the waxing moon, the moon becomes full. Similarly, when reaching the end of the levels, the Dharmakaya also becomes complete and clear. Thus it is said. Similarly, in the root tantra of the Kalachakra, it says: Just as the moon rises in stages, it becomes complete with its parts. The disappearance of shadows is completeness, the moon is neither waning nor full. Similarly, wisdom rises in stages, it becomes complete with its levels. The disappearance of afflictions and so on is completeness, wisdom is neither waning nor full. Thus it is said. Therefore, the ground-of-all, the wisdom Dharmakaya, in the manner of being complete from the beginning with all qualities, exists like a full moon without waning during the time of the ground of sentient beings. During the time of the path of learning, it exists like seeing the parts gradually, such as the first and second days of the lunar month. At the time of the fruition of Buddhahood, it exists like a full moon. This is its meaning. Then, how and by whom is it seen? The clear light seen by the first practitioner without clairvoyance, both the seer and the seen are the flesh eye; then, the clear light seen by one who has attained clairvoyance, both the seer and the seen are the divine eye; then, the clear light of the first level, both the seer and the seen are the Buddha eye; from the second level onwards, the clear light of the Bodhisattva, both the seer and the seen are the wisdom eye; the clear light of the Buddha, both the seer and the seen are the knowledge eye. Thus, the one Tathagatagarbha of the ground is established as the five eyes in the stages of the path, according to the Vimalaprabha (Stainless Light). Here, first, the yogi who is a beginner sees various things with the flesh eye, without clairvoyance. Then, by the power of the boundary of clairvoyance, he sees with the divine eye. Then, by the power of the boundary of detachment, he sees with the Buddha eye. Then, by the power of the boundary of the Bodhisattva, he sees with the wisdom eye. Then, by the power of the mind of the perfectly complete Buddha, he sees with the knowledge eye. All the rest are liberated, thus it is said. Thus, the five eyes of the Tathagata, such as the flesh eye, are for seeing emptiness, while other sentient beings are looking at emptiness.
