It is like the honey of bees, even if one accumulates it oneself, it is used by others and cannot be taken away. In the "Self-Liberation Tantra of Samsara and Nirvana," it says: "Wealth is like the honey of bees, accumulated by oneself but enjoyed by others." These are examples to show the impermanence of the birth-place bardo. Second, what is the example of the dream bardo like? It is like the example of illusion, where illusion appears as anything even though it is non-existent. Similarly, dreams also appear as anything even though they are without inherent nature. Third, what is the example of the meditation bardo like? It is like resting when exhausted. That is, when a tired person rests for a moment, all the suffering of fatigue naturally subsides, and the body, speech, and mind all become blissful. Similarly, we are also exhausted and suffering from being distracted by the waves of delusion of body, speech, and mind. Through the guru's instructions, we settle the three doors into their natural state, and by abiding in meditation, the suffering of physical activity naturally subsides. Like a haystack with a broken rope, we naturally relax, loosen, and let go, and the body blissfully finds rest. Speech is like a broken lute string. For example, the lute produces various sounds, but when the string breaks, the sound ceases. Similarly, the delusion of engaging in meaningless talk is self-liberated. When exhausted, one separates from speech and abides in the natural state, and speech blissfully finds rest. The mind is like a water-powered mill that has been cut off from water. For example, the mill is powered by water, but when the water stops, the turning stops. Similarly, the mind is exhausted by various thoughts, but by relaxing and letting go in its natural state without manipulation, the mind abides blissfully, and the mind finds rest. This is the example of the meditation bardo. Fourth, what is the example of the death-moment bardo like? It is like a guilty person being taken prisoner by a creditor. That is, for example, a guilty person is taken prisoner by a creditor. Going is very frightening, one knows that suffering will come, but one has no power not to go. One wants to stay but has no power to stay. Similarly, in the death-moment bardo, one knows that death will come, one wants to stay alive but has no power to stay. The accumulated wealth cannot be taken away and remains behind. The companions one has been with are helplessly about to separate. One goes alone to an unknown country.

Although knowing one must wander helplessly, one suffers greatly involuntarily. This is an example of the dying Bardo. Fifth, what is the example of the Dharmata Bardo like? It is like a person caught in the midst of a great battle with thousands of soldiers. No matter which direction one looks, one is startled, frightened, fainted, and terrified by the three—body, sound, and light. One spends time in fear, unable to escape by running, unable to overcome by fighting, and spends time in a state of fainting and surrounding visions. This is an example of the Dharmata Bardo. Sixth, what is the example of the Sridpa Bardo like? It is like a bird's feather carried by the wind, or a child wandering in a desolate plain. For example, that child wandering in the desolate plain, initially from a place of emptiness where one doesn't know where one comes from, there is no source to return to; now one doesn't know where to go, there is no place to go; in between, there is no place to stay, so one cannot settle down, crying and wailing, feeling cold, with dull awareness, unhappy heart, trembling, without the concept of day or night, drifting aimlessly, wandering alone in all directions without a friend. Sometimes hearing the sound of wild animals, sometimes being chased by rain and wind, spending time in fright and sorrow, until one finds a cave or house to rely on. Just like that, one goes drifting aimlessly in all directions. Similarly, that mind-body wandering in the Sridpa Bardo also has no power to return to the place from which it initially departed. The corpse is burned in fire, or buried in the ground, or eaten by birds and beasts, there is no source to return to; now there is no place to go; there is no way to stay in this place, one cannot settle down, crying and wailing, feeling cold, with dull awareness, unhappy heart, trembling, without the concept of day or night, riding on the horse of breath, thinking one still has the previous body, drifting aimlessly, wandering in all directions. Feeling chased by many wild animals, hearing the roar of a great mountain collapsing, hearing the sound of a great lake overflowing, hearing the roar of a great fire burning, hearing the sound of a great wind rising, feeling chased by many people, feeling chased by darkness and heavy rain. Fearing these, one flees in all directions wherever one happens to fall, in fear and sorrow.
