Therefore, all times are merely conventional truths; ultimately, the bardo is impossible to exist. The nature of the bardo is emptiness. As stated in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: Outer emptiness, that is, external dharmas such as form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas, etc., are not permanent, nor are they destroyed or disappear. Ultimately, these forms and other dharmas do not have even a hair's breadth of inherent existence, so it is outer emptiness. Inner emptiness, that is, internal dharmas such as the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, etc., are also not permanent, nor are they destroyed or disappear. Ultimately, these internal realms such as the eye do not have even a mote of inherent existence, so it is inner emptiness. Outer-inner emptiness, that is, the eighteen realms of outer and inner, the twelve sources, etc., ultimately, there is neither grasper nor grasped, and it is separated from the nature of object and subject, so it is outer-inner emptiness. Thus it is said, in the Heruka Galpo Tantra: Because form, sound, etc., are destroyed, no thing is outer emptiness; the five faculties are not permanent; the inner is the nature of emptiness; the sources of outer and inner become outer-inner emptiness; emptiness by nature, not other; emptiness is emptiness; the great thousand worlds are emptiness; nirvana, the ultimate, is emptiness; the three realms, conditioned, are all emptiness. And so on, eighteen aspects of emptiness are spoken of. In short, all dharmas included in samsara and nirvana are emptiness, so the nature of the bardo is emptiness. Samaya. Fifth, what are the characteristics of the six bardos? First, the characteristic of the birth-place bardo is: one's own body, this cubit-length square. The five aggregates, the five elements, the six sources, the five faculties, object and subject, afflictions, etc., how these exist, must be determined, and the yogi who knows how their characteristics are, is able to control all appearances. Thus it is said, in the Tantra of Self-Liberation of Samsara and Nirvana:

Thereafter, the characteristics of the Bardo of Becoming are: This square body of one fathom of oneself, the elements and the aggregates, the sources, faculties, objects and object-possessors, how the afflictions abide; the yogi who knows these is able to control all appearances. Thus it is said. Second, the characteristics of the Bardo of Dream are: In the time of deep sleep, without conceptualization, it is the characteristic of naturally luminous light. In the time of dream, it does not abide like an illusion and is of a nature that cannot be examined. Third, the characteristics of the Bardo of Meditation are: From within emptiness, the generation stage, the completion stage, calm abiding, insight, and so forth arise. Fourth, the characteristics of the Bardo of Dying are: The elements are disturbed by the cause of death and illness, the nature of suffering of body, speech, and mind; the ocean of grasping and attachment bursts forth; the suffering of fear of separation of body and mind; the suffering of having to go involuntarily to a place one does not want to go; attachment to friends, wealth, land, and retinue, but without the power to accompany them; the suffering of mental attachment and clinging; by the power of such extremely gross suffering, consciousness becomes confused and agitated; the inability of consciousness to abide in one place is the characteristic of the Bardo of Dying. From the Tantra of Self-Liberation of Samsara and Nirvana: After death, the Dharma is confused and self-liberated. The characteristics of the 'kha ma' are: The elements are disturbed by the cause of death and illness; body, speech, and mind suffer; the ocean of grasping and attachment bursts forth; by the fear of separation of body and mind; suffering is extremely gross; confused and agitated; and consciousness does not abide in one place. Thus it is said. Fifth, the characteristics of the Bardo of Dharmata are: Separated from the body of flesh and blood, transformed into a body without outflows; peaceful and wrathful; the three of sound, light, and rays; and the clarity of wisdom; all appearances arise as the appearances of great bliss, pure, and utterly vast; whatever appears manifests as the realm of Dharmata; this is the characteristic of the Bardo of Dharmata. From the Tantra of Self-Liberation of Samsara and Nirvana: The characteristics of the Bardo of Dharmata are: Without aggregates and separated from outflows; the peaceful body and the wrathful body; the light and colors of wisdom; the parts of bindus and the appearances of the elements; all appearances are the field of great bliss; self-appearance is pure, all appearances,
