In short, taking refuge is the outer refuge common to both Sutra and Tantra. The supreme deity of the five families of peaceful and wrathful deities in the ocean of tantras, the great adornment that is completely gathered into a single mandala, the wrathful king of great power who gathers all strengths, completely manifests in the nature of the three secrets of oneness, is the inner refuge. Inwardly, one's own aggregates, elements, sense bases, and eight consciousnesses, together with their objects, are primordially pure as the play of great bliss wisdom, inseparable from the nature of reality, so recognizing one's own nature as the union of the three roots is the uncommon inner refuge of mantra in general. All of that, like various drawings painted on the surface of a single precious wall, without good or bad, the basis or agent of all the manifestations, explanations, expansions, and contractions of the mandala is: the nature of reality, the mind of enlightenment, abiding in the nature of the nine spaces of wisdom, certain of being the nature of the single primordial wisdom, knowing one's own nature as completely perfected within oneself as the deity of reality, maintaining the continuity of experience while abiding in such a view, is the Vajra Essence Secret Refuge. Those distinctions also need to be practiced sequentially in the manner of cause and effect, therefore, by knowing the non-contradictory oneness, settling the mind on the meaning of the union of the two truths as refuge, with all pervasive sentient beings as the support of refuge also abiding before the field of merit, thinking of following me and practicing, one takes refuge. If this visualization sequence is used as a guide for maturation and liberation, then by training the mind in the distinctions of outer, inner, secret, and suchness refuge, one should straighten the view. During ordinary activities, think that all the refuge objects are completely present. Joining the palms together at the heart, combining samsara and nirvana equally, it is also permissible to make devotion the path with faithful mind. The object of practice at this time, in general, is all impure self-appearance, and in particular, worldly refuges such as people, officials, castles, armies, mountains, etc., and non-Buddhist gods such as Brahma and Ishvara, evil refuges that should not be taken refuge in such as demons, fierce spirits, nagas, etc., and holding wrong views and disrespect towards the true, non-deceptive refuges, the Guru and the Three Jewels, and the ultimate refuge, self-aware sugatagarbha, abiding as primordially complete.

The mind's appearances of delusion and conceptualization, along with their habitual tendencies, due to not understanding reality, are purified by practicing the inner secret refuge according to the scriptures. The uncommon method for perfecting the qualities of the Three Refuges in one's own mindstream as a result of this purification is that the activity and result, the experience of profound wisdom, arise in the mindstream. This alone is the foundation stone of the Buddhist path, and because its benefits are immeasurable, it is crucial to cherish making the practice essential. During the actual stage of the generation phase, if one does not properly understand the three aspects of clarity, stability, and purity, then by generating unwavering faith with the aspiration of refuge in the indivisibility of the deity and the lama, praying will lead to the attainment of accomplishments. This is a profound key point, as stated in the deity instructions of the 'Four Nails of Vital Essence' by Chöje Paltrul Rinpoche. Jamgön Mipham Rinpoche also said in the general framework of outer, inner, and secret approach and accomplishment: The supreme deity is the embodiment of liberation and wisdom, the ultimate fulfillment of the two benefits, possessing immeasurable wisdom, love, and power, and is unfailing in bestowing accomplishments as desired through aspiration and wisdom. If one engages in generation, recitation, offering, and accomplishment, thinking that one who is bound by all fetters will definitely be placed in a state of lasting happiness through blessings, then practicing in accordance with the outer method is due to the connection of great compassion, and one will definitely be cared for due to the power of aspiration and wisdom. All these statements share the same essential meaning. Fourth, the mind of enlightenment, which prevents the vows of the Bodhisattva from degenerating and is the antidote to the Hinayana: Along with reciting "Hūṃ" (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: hūṃ, literal Chinese meaning: 吽), which represents the mind of all Buddhas, the union of omniscient wisdom and impartial great compassion, and the mind of enlightenment that dispels obscurations. Within the pure, primordial ground of the Dharmadhatu (Tibetan: ཆོས, Sanskrit Devanagari: धर्म, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: dharma, literal Chinese meaning: 法), without the partiality of acceptance or rejection of samsara and nirvana, self and other are equal (Tibetan: མཉམ, Sanskrit Devanagari: सम, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: sama, literal Chinese meaning: equal), merging into great bliss. Realizing the meaning of this "abiding" (Tibetan: བརྡལ, Sanskrit Devanagari: विदल, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: vidala, literal Chinese meaning: expanding) is the ultimate Bodhicitta. And the word "Yang" (Tibetan: ཡང, Sanskrit Devanagari: पुनर्, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: punar, literal Chinese meaning: again) is the meaning of gathering the subsequent conventional Bodhicitta. If one does not realize such reality and clings to conceptual thoughts, then by clinging to the appearances of the six realms of samsara and the cause and effect of the illusion of the body, one will wander in the cycle of birth and death from beginningless time.
