I. The two named Dear and Joyful, who are able to coil Mount Sumeru three times with their long serpent bodies, sleep for a long time, and when they wake up, they exhale a fierce breath, causing many creatures such as birds and wild animals dwelling on Mount Sumeru and the Golden Mountain to die from poisoning, and they devour those corpses that fall into the sea. Monks who have attained supernatural powers, those who dwell on the terraces of Mount Sumeru and meditate, also become emaciated and pale due to being struck by this poisonous breath. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Maudgalyayana's son: 'Go and subdue the Naga kings Joyful and Dear.' Then, the Venerable Maudgalyayana's son went there by means of his supernatural powers, and when the two were asleep, he struck a cymbal, making a sound. However, the two did not wake up. Even stepping on each other's bodies did not wake them up. Entering into their bellies, moving up and down, coming out of their nostrils, rising into the sky and falling down again, etc., even so, they still did not wake up. Then, he transformed into a huge, extremely terrifying serpent that could coil around Mount Sumeru seven times, and when he pressed down on the two, they woke up and looked, and knowing that they were being pressed down by an extremely terrifying dragon, they were very frightened and fled in the form of Brahmins. As they fled, as if approaching the surrounding mountains, the Venerable Maudgalyayana's son appeared in his real body in front of them and asked: 'Where are you Nagas going?' The two Nagas thought: 'This must be the power of this monk.' (So they said,) 'Venerable, are you not joking? Do you not care about the messenger of the Teacher?' (Maudgalyayana's son asked,) 'Then, what should be done?' (The Nagas replied,) 'There, proclaim the Dharma that will generate faith, and then take us to the presence of the Blessed One.' Then (Maudgalyayana's son) led them away, and the Teacher had also gone to the seashore and was sitting there. The Naga kings Joyful and Dear, together with their retinues, made offerings with many offerings, prostrated at his feet, and then sat on one side. The Blessed One severely rebuked their evil deeds and taught the Dharma. He admonished them not to harm those who dwell on the terraces of Mount Sumeru, and placed them on the foundation of refuge and precepts. In this way, Joyful and Near-Joyful were placed in the Dharma.

From that time onwards, many hundreds of thousands of nagas quickly became established in the Dharma. I, the sole Illuminating King, was saved from the harm of the nagas in this way: After that, those two nagas, at auspicious times, made two jewel enclosures from the terraces of Mount Meru to Shravasti, and they went through there to attend upon the Teacher. Sometimes, at night, they would enter into immeasurable palaces that travel in the sky and come in the guise of gods; during the day, they would come in the guise of boys or householders. Those two nagas had twenty-five hundred attendants, who were renowned and powerful nagas. The immeasurable palace was made of four kinds of jewels, and the food and drink were the nectar of the gods. Then, one time, when they were listening to the Dharma from the Blessed One in the form of householders, King Illuminating Light also saw the Teacher coming from afar. Should we two attend to the king or attend to the Dharma? The Teacher said: Attend to the Dharma. Then, when King Illuminating Light came near, they did not rise. When the king saw that the two of them looked like householders of his own realm, he thought: These two live in my realm, yet they do not rise for me, and he became angry. Although the Teacher spoke of the faults of anger, the king was distracted and did not clearly understand it in his heart, so he quickly got up and left, placing a yogurt seller at the gate. If those two householders come out, cut off their heads, and then he went to the garden. After those words were spoken, the servants of the two nagas, those who lived by the enclosure, began to rain down a rain of various weapons upon the king. The Teacher said to the venerable Maudgalyayana's son: Consider King Illuminating Light. Maudgalyayana's son blessed that rain of weapons into lotuses and utpala flowers, etc., and caused them to remain in the sky until they could be taken by human hands. There, the king and the ministers, the queen, and the king's relatives all said: This rain of flowers is due to the power of the merit of each of our good deeds, and they disagreed and came back and reported to the Teacher. The Teacher said: All of those are not so, this is the power of Maudgalyayana's son.

If you don't believe it, take one out and throw it on the ground. There, they picked it up and threw it, and it turned into a weapon and made a sound, and the king was very scared and asked, "What is this?" (The Buddha) said, "It is because you have generated hatred towards the nagas." I replied, "I don't even remember seeing it." (The Buddha) told the previous events in detail. However, those two nagas were not angry, but their retinue was angry. I asked, "Then, what should be done about this?" (The Buddha) said, "Ask for forgiveness." After that, at another time, those two nagas came as before. When the Teacher gestured, King Gsal-rgyal (Clear Victory) stretched out his hand and asked for forgiveness, and the two of them also forgave him. The second, subduing the yaksha 'brog gnas (pasture place): When Gsal-rgyal (Clear Victory) and Gzugs-can-snying-pos (Embodied Heart) ruled the kingdom, the thieves were punished with death. Those people lived in the forests and pasture monasteries between Magadha and Kosala, destroying all like-minded merchants. There was a hero named Stong-thub (Thousand Powers) near Gzugs-can-snying-po (Embodied Heart). Therefore, Stong-thub (Thousand Powers) was sent to clear the way for the many merchants going from Royal City to Kosala. He carried two quivers filled with five hundred arrows each and went in front of the merchants. The thieves said, "Go back, you will be harmed." Although Stong-thub (Thousand Powers) spoke gently, they did not listen, and he shot arrows at the thieves who appeared from one to five hundred. After that, another five hundred thieves arrived. Stong-thub (Thousand Powers) said, "I have already killed five hundred, you should go back." Those people said, "We have not died even one, why should we go back?" "Then, shoot an arrow!" After shooting the arrow, five hundred people died, and everyone said, "It is a yaksha," and then they all scattered. After that, Stong-thub (Thousand Powers) built houses to clear the road between the forests. Today, a city called 'brog gnas (pasture place) has been established. A large market has also appeared. The town chief is also Stong-thub (Thousand Powers). At another time, a heretical temple was built, and all the new brides in that place had to go to that temple first, and then the town chief would first engage in improper conduct. After that, the townspeople, because of that reason...

Regarding the discussion of killing the official: One day, a pair of wise men went to the village chief's pasture. There, they received alms. Before the merit of the offering was finished, the villagers made a bathing pool, and the messenger who was delivering gifts to the village chief arrived there. When he went to the pool to wash his hair, the clay that changes the color of the hair got into his eyes and blocked them. Those people attacked with weapons and killed the village chief. One of the wise men, by the power of receiving alms, made a vow: May these people be reborn as those who are killed. Immediately after speaking, he was reborn as a malicious Yaksha and requested a residence from the son of Vaishravana, who granted him the pasture. After that, he spread a severe plague, and there were cases of measuring corpses by the basketful. After asking the diviners, they learned that it was caused by the village chief who had died and been reborn as a Yaksha. When people prepared to flee to other places, the Yaksha personally appeared in the form of a demon and blocked the road. The people said: Please, village chief, be patient. The Yaksha said: If you offer a thousand people every day, I will be patient. Later, it was finally reduced to a hundred people. Some people said: If this continues, the city will be empty. Instead, let us offer a cart filled with food and six oxen, and a person leading an ox, every day, and please be patient. The Yaksha said: Then you must not be sad and cry, but offer with dance, song, and music. They agreed, and the plague stopped. After that, the villagers began to take turns. They wrote each family's name on a tile, shook it, and whichever was drawn, that family had to send someone, without a substitute, either themselves or their son, and they established such a rule. After doing this for some time, when a householder went to a foreign land, his wife gave birth to a son at home. When he returned home, he saw the family plaque hanging on the door. Entering the house, his wife happily said: A son was born. He said nothing, and after his wife asked, he told her what had happened. After that, he decided to send the son, and the parents lit lamps at night and set up offerings on the roof, praying to the Buddha with great devotion, saying: Please save my son. The next day, the cart carrying the son and so on departed as usual.
