'I have no wisdom greater than mine, for I know all the scriptures; I have no power greater than mine, for I know the wish-fulfilling cow and the philosopher's stone; I have no compassion greater than mine, for I intend to do all sorts of things for the benefit of sentient beings.' The master went to a city in India and met a monk. He asked, 'How many precepts have you taken?' The monk replied, 'I have taken precepts in the teachings of Buddha Kashyapa (Sanskrit: Kāśyapa, name of an ancient Buddha).' The master then lost one instance of pride. Then, the master went to the land of the Nagas, and while there, a Dakini appeared. The master realized that he did not even know the number of scriptures, and he lost another instance of pride. After that, the master went further, and at Vajrasana (Sanskrit: Vajrāsana, Bodh Gaya), the master's feet became stuck. There, the master prayed to Tara (Sanskrit: Tārā), and his feet were released, and he lost another instance of pride. Then, as the master went on, he saw the corpse of a dog, which smelled so bad that no one could get near it. An old beggar was cleaning the worms off the dog and then cutting off his own flesh to give to the worms. The master thought, 'I do not even have as much compassion as this old beggar.' Thus, he lost his pride, and various precious qualities arose in his mind. The master Bodhisattva Candra-dhvaja had excellent Samadhi, so much so that he did not even feel birds landing on his head, but he was oppressed by pride. One night, he dreamed of a clear-skinned man who said, 'It is shameful to be proud like that! If you truly want to practice, rely on one hundred and eight masters, teach the mind to one hundred and eight disciples, repair one hundred and eight dilapidated temples, build one hundred and eight stupas, preach the Dharma to one hundred and eight monks, and speak the Dharma in one hundred and eight prisons.' The master thought, 'I can barely provide for my own food and clothing, how can I afford to repair temples and so on?' One night, he dreamed, 'Do not be afraid! Repair my temple of Khasarpana (Sanskrit: Khasarpana, Avalokiteśvara).' After striving there, someone said, 'If you repair the temple, we will also offer food and wealth.' Thus, the master accumulated merit and obtained an inexhaustible supply of food and wealth. Later, the master provided food for about a thousand monks. It is said that the master preached the Dharma in one prison no more than seventy-five times. In general, do not rely too much on gods and good dreams, as they may become obstacles and may turn into illusions. Only by striving without expectation or doubt can one truly achieve. If you are complacent about your qualities, that will become an obstacle on the path.' If you have not attained qualities, you should not complain about your fortune. You should rely on a good master, receive good teachings, and practice. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the father is alive, it is a great merit. Having a lot of wealth does not mean having a lot of merit. The Naga king has precious wish-fulfilling jewels, but what is the use? It is still an animal, and it goes downwards. All other beings are the same. Nowadays, having the opportunity to practice Dharma is rarer than the Udumbara flower. All animals have clear consciousness, but due to karma, they are in a difficult situation. Whether practitioners practice well or badly will appear at the time of death, will appear in the bardo, and will affect the next life. If you don't practice well now, even if you have many instructions, it will be useless, like regretting after the fact. No one knows when death will come. Young people think they will not die, but death is equal to everyone. If there is a conflict, strong people may die easily. Old people think they will not die, but no one can escape death. When life is exhausted, even if the Buddha comes, it will be useless, so work hard now. If you don't understand how karma works, you can't change it. There are illusions with attachment and illusions without attachment. Illusions with attachment can be eliminated by listening and thinking, but illusions without attachment cannot be eliminated by listening and thinking. Even if you just understand that all phenomena are empty, you cannot eliminate illusions. Just like when the eyes are squeezed, what is seen will appear to be non-existent, and mountains and rivers will appear as duality. Even if you understand that all phenomena are empty, the appearance of duality cannot be eliminated until the eyes return to normal. Similarly, for a person with an eye disease, the illusion of flying hairs cannot be eliminated. Just as a skilled doctor can prescribe medicine to eliminate the illusion of flying hairs, we need to meditate to eliminate illusions. Therefore, meditation is essential. When sleeping, sleep at the end of the bed, and when eating, eat only a little. If you are not practicing Dharma, nothing else can help you, so put down all affairs and work hard to practice! Atisha! In order for a fortunate person to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, these four dharmas are essential. Homage to the Guru! The precious master said: In order for a fortunate person to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, these four dharmas are essential. 'Abide in discipline, diligently listen, think, and meditate,' Thus it is said. First of all, discipline is essential. Therefore, the teacher praised discipline: 'Those who uphold discipline can meet the Buddha,' 'Discipline is like the earth, the foundation of all virtues.' Thus it is said. Strictly observing pure discipline, with no regrets in the heart, is the cause of arising special samadhi. Listening is essential: listening is the lamp that dispels the darkness of ignorance, is the close friend who never abandons in times of trouble, is the treasure that thieves cannot steal, is the glory of noble people. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
