Although there are many different kinds of faith, such as faith in the Three Jewels (Tibetan: དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་, meaning: Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), there is none that does not include the faith of desire, the faith of joy, and the faith of conviction. Therefore, it is very important to have faith. However, even if you have faith, it is difficult to achieve without wisdom, so wisdom is very important. A Geshe (Tibetan: མཚན་ཉིད་པ, meaning: religious scholar) said: 'The dull-witted follow faith.' Without wisdom, even if you want to teach the Dharma, you cannot start. It seems very difficult to do everything without turning it upside down.' He also said, 'It is easy to be deceived by evil spiritual friends.' Therefore, the teacher Inexhaustible Intelligence (Tibetan: སློབ་དཔོན་བློ་གྲོས་མི་ཟད་པ་) said: 'All these limbs, the Buddha (Tibetan: ཐུབ་པ, meaning: the Able One, referring to Shakyamuni Buddha) said are for the sake of wisdom.' and said that meditation and diligence are all causes for generating wisdom. Therefore, if you want to pacify suffering, you must generate wisdom.' He said that if you want to pacify the suffering of samsara, wisdom is also very important. In the Prajnaparamita Sutra (Tibetan: ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པ་, meaning: crossing over, reaching the other shore) it also says: 'These five wisdoms, without an object, cannot attain Bodhi. When it is completely grasped by wisdom, when can one obtain the gain of the eye and obtain its name.' Therefore, good deeds that have not been grasped by wisdom are like a blind person leading the way, and cannot become the cause of Bodhi, and even the name of Prajnaparamita itself cannot be obtained. If it is grasped by the wisdom of emptiness, then everything that is done will become the path to Bodhi. Even giving a piece of food to an old dog can be said to be the perfection of generosity. Therefore, wisdom is very important, but wisdom that is merely superficial is not enough. It is necessary to recognize afflictions through the wisdom of listening, to suppress afflictions through the wisdom of thinking, and to eradicate afflictions from the root through the wisdom of practice. Even if you have great wisdom, it is useless without compassion, so compassion is very important. In the Lotus Sutra (Tibetan: དམ་པའི་ཆོས་པད་མ་དཀར་པོ་) it also says: 'If there is one Dharma, all Dharmas are in its palm, what is that Dharma?' The answer is: 'That is great compassion.' Where there is a head, there is life. Similarly, where there is compassion, there is unsurpassed Bodhi.' In the Samadhiraja Sutra (Tibetan: མདོ་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་རྒྱལ་པོ་) it is also asked: 'Can one attain unsurpassed Bodhi through just one Dharma?' The answer is: 'There is one Dharma, and with it, one can become a Buddha.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, like this, it is said, 'Great Compassion' (snying rje chen po). Therefore, great compassion must be related to wisdom. In the Paramita Vehicle (pha rol tu phyin pa'i theg pa), it is said that skillful means (thabs) and wisdom (shes rab) must be combined. In the 'Gaya Gori Sutra' (ga ya go ri'i mdo), it says, 'Skillful means without wisdom is also binding, and wisdom without skillful means is also binding.' Therefore, the importance of combining skillful means and wisdom is emphasized. In Tantra (gsang sngags), the view that the generation stage (bskyed rdzogs) and completion stage (rdzogs) are inseparable is also like this; if these two are not complete, one cannot attain unsurpassed enlightenment (byang chub), just like a bird with broken wings. Even if one possesses these three qualities, if one does not meet a guru who guides the path, it is of no benefit. As it is said, 'Even if everything is perfect, without a guru, one cannot be liberated. Without someone to hold the pole, the boat cannot cross the river.' Therefore, meeting a virtuous guru is crucial. Regarding the characteristics of a guru, it is said: 'A spiritual friend should be tamed, peaceful, and very peaceful, possessing qualities, diligent, and rich in scriptures. He should be thoroughly realized, skilled in speech, possess compassion, and abandon laziness; one should rely on him.' It is also said: 'One who sees the truth, speaks well, possesses compassion, and is a noble person without laziness, know that he is great.' This is what is said in the 'Ornament of the Sutras' (mdo sde rgyan). Pandit (slob dpon) Inexhaustible Intelligence (blo gros mi zad pa) said: 'A virtuous spiritual friend at all times, skilled in the meaning of the Great Vehicle, the supreme conduct of a Bodhisattva (byang chub sems dpa'), will not be abandoned even for the sake of life.' Although the characteristics of a guru are mentioned in each and every treatise of Tantra and Sutra, the great accomplished master (bla ma) Dagpo Rinpoche (dwags po rin po che) said: 'It must be someone who has cut off attachment to this life, who guides others with great wisdom, and who does not abandon disciples with great compassion.' First, if the guru has concerns about this life, then when the disciple makes offerings, he will be suspicious; if there are no offerings, he will not teach the Dharma. He himself will be busy with this life, increasing many sins such as greed and hatred. The disciple, because of relying on the guru, will also increase many sins. If one is not careful, it is like yaks falling off a cliff together, without any effort. Therefore, the guru must be someone who has cut off attachment to this life. However, without wisdom, one cannot tame the disciple's mindstream. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
