'Meeting with the earth is the best of friends.' Thus it is said. Furthermore, hearing causes one to turn away from sin, hearing causes one to abandon what is meaningless, hearing causes one to know the distinctions of the Dharma, hearing causes one to attain Nirvana. And so on, therefore hearing is very important. ’The one who has heard much dwells comfortably in the forest's edge, in the veils of youth. If you wish to seek the Buddha's teachings, then turn to those who have heard much. Honor them as you would a Khenpo (abbot), and you will quickly attain Buddhahood.’ Thus it is said. Moreover, the wisdom of contemplation is very important, for if one does not contemplate, it is like a vessel with a hole in the bottom, and hearing will be wasted, like water in a leaky vase, unable to be retained in memory.’ Thus it is said, therefore one must contemplate. Contemplation overcomes afflictions. Furthermore, if one does not meditate, it is of no benefit. In the Avatamsaka Sutra (Buddha Garland Sutra) it also says: 'For example, a great ocean, though it saves many beings, dies itself in the midst of the water. Not meditating on the Dharma is the same. For example, a blind painter, though he paints amidst the six realms, cannot see even one thing himself. Not meditating on the Dharma is the same. For example, a deaf musician, though he plays amidst the six realms, cannot hear even one thing himself.' ’So what should one meditate on?’ Meditation must combine both Shamatha (calm abiding) and Vipassana (insight). 'With Vipassana that is thoroughly stable in Shamatha, one should know that afflictions are completely destroyed. First, one should seek Shamatha, which is accomplished in a place without worldly attachments.’ Thus it is said. Moreover, 'First, it is important to make the unstable mind stable. Second, it is important to have the instructions that make the stable mind even more stable, like a fixed post, bringing forth experience. As soon as the mind is stable and has a special quality, the ocean of Shamatha is calm, and the reflection of the moon of Vipassana will appear.' Therefore, the instructions for generating Vipassana are: 'If you do not understand the secret of the mind,' and 'Here there is nothing to remove, and nothing to place. Look at reality as it is, and seeing it as it is, you will be liberated.' Also, 'Consciousness unstained by conceptual thought is the characteristic of emptiness.' Also, 'With this mind like the sky, upon all phenomena like the sky, meditating like the sky, one will also attain Buddhahood like the sky.' Also, 'If you realize the mind, you are a Buddha, so do not seek a Buddha from elsewhere.' Therefore, one should generate Vipassana. When Vipassana arises... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, the Vajra Cutter states: 'Whoever sees me by form, whoever seeks me by sound, that person walks a false path and cannot see the Tathagata.' It also says, 'All Buddhas should be known as the Dharma body, and the nature of Dharma cannot be known, because it cannot be cognized.' The Perfection of Wisdom Sutra also states: 'Not seeing forms, nor seeing feelings, not seeing perceptions, nor seeing formations, not seeing consciousness, not seeing mind, is called seeing the Dharma, as taught by the Tathagata.' Jowo Rinpoche also said: 'In that, there is no seeing object, no seeing subject.' Therefore, if one does not remember death, Dharma will not arise, so practicing death is of utmost importance. Lie at the end of the bed, eat at the end of the meal, and even if you only say 'Ha,' it is important not to regret it. The precious instructions of the holy ones are the medicine for the fortunate, the nectar of immortality, the essence of life. May those with faith and wisdom practice it! ཨྠྀི།(Tibetan) अथि(Sanskrit Devanagari) athi (Sanskrit Romanization) to have) To attain unsurpassable Buddhahood in one lifetime and one body, one must possess six qualities. Homage to the precious Lama! The precious Master said: To attain unsurpassable Buddhahood in one lifetime and one body, one must possess six qualities: faith, wisdom, compassion, meeting the Lama, receiving Dharma teachings, and striving to accomplish their meaning. First, faith is crucial. For those without faith, virtuous qualities will not arise. Just like a seed burned by fire cannot sprout green shoots. Many faults of lacking faith are explained. The Compendium of Trainings summarizes the benefits of faith: 'Strengthen the root of faith, and develop a firm mind towards Bodhi.' Therefore, it is taught as the root of all qualities. The ultimate truth of self-arising phenomena is realized only through faith. Just as the blazing light of the sun cannot be seen by the blind. Therefore, in the Flower Ornament Sutra, it is also said: 'Faith is a treasure, wealth, and the supreme foot, like a hand that gathers the root of virtue. It protects and increases all qualities. Faith is like a mother who goes before, giving birth to all virtues. Through faith, the Bodhi tree grows completely.' There are many accurate explanations in that sutra. The logicians say: Have faith in the four truths of knowable things, have faith in the result of the three bodies, and have faith in the cause and effect of karma. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-2-136a
