Collection of Teachings by the First Karmapa 1KM9 A Tsok Cho (Gathering Dharma) by Je Düsum Khyenpa (the First Karmapa, meaning 'Knower of the Three Times'). 1-2-124a ༄༅། །A Tsok Cho by Je Düsum Khyenpa. It is extremely important to advise one's own mind and to have this view. A Tsok Cho by Je Düsum Khyenpa. All the activities of the Buddhas of the three times, making all beings have faith through the nine gestures of dance, causing them to ripen and be liberated, purifying faults and perfecting qualities, with skillful means and great compassion, the precious Lama who always takes care of all sentient beings, I prostrate to him. From the mouth of Dharma Lord Rinpoche: All the scriptures spoken by the Fully and Perfectly Awakened Buddha, are spoken as a means of taming the mind, and there is nothing else. It is extremely important to advise one's own mind and to have this view. All of us great meditators should not speak empty words. If attachment and hatred increase, then the afflictions become greater than those of ordinary people. Having spent the night with attachment and hatred, and having been dull yesterday and not having meditated, it is useless. If you do that, the meditator will become a white crow. The thought of practicing Dharma comes to everyone, but that alone is not enough. All the urgent tasks must be put aside, and from today onwards, one must make a firm commitment to practice. There is no time in life. For us great meditators, there is either diligence or laziness, there is no in-between. They always try to be born as wise men. 1-2-124b If it benefits the mind, then it is Dharma practice. Because I am a Lama, I will say some advice that benefits the mind. If you sincerely want to practice Dharma, it is important to constantly watch your mind. Because you are a Mahayana practitioner, loving-kindness and compassion are very important. Since all the qualities come from relying on the Lama, it is important to remember the Lama's kindness constantly in the three times, and to be diligent and not distracted, and to repeatedly check your mind. Wisdom will naturally arise from within. All of us meditators should focus on meditating without being distracted, instead of just listening, thinking, and looking at books. However, for beginners, if there is no discipline of virtuous practice, they will not know how to practice Dharma. The body, speech, and mind are usually perceived as ordinary, so the discipline of virtuous practice must be maintained without any interruption. According to some scriptures and instructions, some start from dawn, and some start from dusk, but there is no contradiction. If there is more phlegm (a term in Tibetan medicine, referring to mucus), then the mind will be very clear in the morning, so start from then. If there is more wind (a term in Tibetan medicine, referring to energy), it is better to practice in the evening. In short, it depends on your own situation. If you are not feeling well, do not force yourself. If you are healthy, then strive to practice. If you are sick, then you should let go of everything and pray to the Lama with one mind. If you are healthy but do not practice, then it is a pity. All of us meditators, if the mind is not changed, then you are not a true practitioner. If the mind is changed, even if you do not say it, you are a true practitioner. Therefore, whether the mind is changed is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have faith in the Lama, then you will not receive blessings. Therefore, faith in the Lama is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have compassion for sentient beings, then you are not a Mahayana practitioner. Therefore, compassion is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have renunciation for samsara, then you will not be able to be liberated from samsara. Therefore, renunciation is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have shame for your actions, then you will not be able to abandon evil and cultivate virtue. Therefore, shame is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have faith in cause and effect, then you will not be able to avoid evil deeds. Therefore, faith in cause and effect is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have realization of emptiness, then you will not be able to cut off afflictions. Therefore, realization of emptiness is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have gratitude for the Lama, then you will not be able to attain accomplishments. Therefore, gratitude is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have respect for the Dharma, then you will not be able to attain wisdom. Therefore, respect is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have respect for the Sangha, then you will not be able to attain merit. Therefore, respect is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have protection for the precepts, then you will not be able to attain liberation. Therefore, protecting the precepts is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have loyalty to the vows, then you will not be able to attain siddhis (accomplishments). Therefore, loyalty to the vows is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have the intention to benefit sentient beings, then you will not be able to attain Buddhahood. Therefore, benefiting sentient beings is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not cherish Bodhicitta, then you will not be able to attain Bodhi. Therefore, cherishing Bodhicitta is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have faith in the Lama, then you will not be able to receive blessings. Therefore, faith in the Lama is very important. All of us meditators, if you do not have compassion for sentient beings, then you are not a Mahayana practitioner. Therefore, compassion is very important.
