Accumulating merit, offering to the Three Jewels, and practicing the non-dual nature are four crucial practices. Homage to the precious spiritual friend! The venerable one said: 'Always contemplate death and accumulate merit.' Offering to the Three Jewels and practicing the non-dual nature are four crucial practices. All Dharmas are included within these four; as Lama Dakpo Rinpoche said: 'Firstly, contemplating death is crucial; one should remember the deaths of the elderly, the young, those in their prime, villagers, and householders.' Everything must pass away. At the time of death, wealth, fame, etc., are of no help, and no one can accompany you. Alas, worldly afflictions! They are impermanent and will inevitably change. Even the beauty of a lotus flower should be remembered.' As it is said, everything will eventually be left behind. If one understands that Dharma is needed at the time of death, then initially it is the cause for entering the Dharma, and in the middle, it is crucial because one does not know when one will die, as the Bodhicaryavatara says: 'My sins are not yet purified, and death will quickly come before me. What should I do then? Therefore, I should quickly take refuge.' As it is said, one does not know when one will die, and there will not even be time to stretch one's legs and sit, so it is the motivation to practice Dharma. Ultimately, it is also crucial because knowing death is Prajnaparamita.' Or it is said: 'The name of death is the ultimate truth.' As it is said, death is the Dharmakaya. If one thinks that contemplating death is a Hinayana practice, then both Sutra and Tantra say that contemplating death is crucial.' If one asks: 'After death, will it be like the nihilistic view of the heretics, where nothing exists?' The answer is: 'It is not that nothing exists, because of the accumulation of merit, one must take rebirth according to karma.' If one is led by hatred and engages in the ten non-virtuous actions, one will fall into hell and suffer endless torments of heat and cold, cutting and pounding, which are unbearable. Now, if our bodies are touched by a spark of fire, or if we are without clothes for a day, we cry out in pain. The suffering of hell is unimaginable, so we must eliminate the causes of evil. The ten non-virtuous actions led by hatred should not be done even at the cost of one's life. If one does not abandon hatred, even if one takes refuge in the Three Jewels, one is still contrary to the four qualities of a renunciate. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
