From the perspective of (presence or absence of) defilements, there are three types. As stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Impure, impure-pure, and extremely pure, respectively, are sentient beings, Bodhisattvas, and Tathāgatas." And as stated in its commentary: "Thus, in the state of impurity, it is called the realm of sentient beings; in the state of impure-pure, it is called Bodhisattva; in the state of extreme purity, it is called Tathāgata." Just as it is said. Similarly, the Three Vehicles and so on are different, and the differences between the Ten Bhumis and Five Paths, such as upper and lower, are also different. Similarly, all phenomena that appear as upper and lower, good and bad, such as the good and bad of beings, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, Bodhisattvas, Buddhas, and Aryas, are like earthenware vessels, wooden vessels, and precious vessels, etc. Although they appear different, with good and bad, the space within these vessels is equal without good or bad. Similarly, the Dharmadhatu, the ultimate truth, the naturally luminous light, is without good or bad, without increase or decrease, and is universally present in everything. As stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Like the non-conceptual nature, as space pervades everywhere, the nature of mind, the stainless realm, likewise pervades everywhere. That is the common characteristic, the ultimate quality of pervasiveness, the inferior, intermediate, and superior forms, like space." Just as it is said. So, what are the three states mentioned above? It is that very essence, which is divided into Samsara and Nirvana by the difference of whether or not it is liberated from the obscuring defilements. As stated in that very treatise: "Covered by the net of afflictions, it is definitely called sentient beings; when it is free from afflictions, it is called Buddha." Just as it is said. These three states are also such that ordinary beings, obscured by the great darkness of obscurations, have only a small portion of qualities. From the magnitude of the power of the purity of the essence, it gradually weakens in sequence, therefore the Arhat qualities of Hearers and Solitary Realizers are superior. And those Bodhisattvas who have attained superiority by not abandoning everything that even they do not know appear superior. Therefore, the Buddhas who are free from all obscurations appear superior.

Therefore, the three lower noble ones, namely the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas, do not see the ultimate truth of the sphere of reality as it is, because they abide on the paths of accumulation and joining, so they only have mental speculation and do not see it directly. In the paths of seeing and meditation, they only see one aspect. However, through that path, just as a child can only see the sunlight on the eaves, but cannot see the sun that pervades everything, they can only see a part of the qualities of the sphere of reality, and there is no opportunity to see the completely perfect qualities. Because it is a realm that cannot be expressed by language, it is encompassed by the ultimate truth; because it is not a place that can be understood, it transcends metaphors. As it is said in the scriptures: 'Even the Victorious Mother and the noble ones cannot conceive of it.' In the realm of the Buddha, how the nature manifests, one can see it completely and perfectly. In the commentary on the Uttaratantra, it says: 'Like the sun in the clouds, eaves, and sky, you are just a wise person here. Even the noble ones with pure eyes of wisdom cannot see everything completely. Blessed One, you have a pure Dharmakaya and boundless wisdom, so you can see all knowable things that pervade the boundless space.' As it is said. Thus, the nature of the sphere of reality, which is naturally luminous in the realm of sentient beings, naturally abides within them, so do sentient beings become Buddhas by accumulating the two accumulations and eliminating the two obscurations? It is not like that, because there are two kinds of elimination: naturally pure and the removal of temporary stains. The first is the essence of the Dharma, which is complete from the beginning, not eliminated by antidotes, but its own nature abides in the nature of great purity from the beginning, without change. As it is said in the Sutra of the Ornament of Wisdom Light, which enters into the realm of all Buddhas: 'Manjushri, the mind is naturally luminous, and it is defiled by all temporary afflictions, but it is not naturally defiled. Whatever is naturally luminous is without defilement. For that which is without defilement, there is no antidote that can remove defilement.' And in the Twenty-five Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, it says: ' कौशिका (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: कौशिका, Sanskrit Romanization: kauśika, Chinese literal meaning: कौशिका), what do you think?'
