And, even a thousandth part, a millionth part, or a hundred trillionth part, cannot come close. Numbers, parts, counting, examples, and reasons cannot bear it. Complete dedication is the best, the principal, the sacred, the supreme, the excellent, the glorious, the unsurpassed, the incomparable. Subhuti, therefore, in a non-attaching manner, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, he should skillfully dedicate those roots of virtue entirely to unexcelled, perfect enlightenment. Thus and so forth, it is extensively taught. Secondly, the reason for dedication is: Like this, the vast accumulation of merit accumulated by abiding in the worldly path, if not transformed into unconditioned Bodhi, will mostly become the fruits of happiness and prosperity in the realms of gods and humans and be exhausted. Some, because of the constant increase of anger and other afflictions, will be wasted in the Bardo. Therefore, the roots of virtue correctly dedicated to Bodhi will never be exhausted. In the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati, it says: Sagaramati, if a drop of saliva is dropped on the sand, it will dry up immediately. If it is dropped into the great ocean, as long as the great ocean does not dry up, the drop of saliva will not dry up either. Similarly, the roots of virtue not dedicated to Bodhi will be exhausted and will not increase. Any roots of virtue dedicated to Bodhi will not be exhausted and will increase. Thus it is said. If someone asks, even the roots of virtue of the noble ones who abide in the path beyond the world, if not completely dedicated to Bodhi, will be wasted? The answer is no. Because in that Sutra it says:

O Ocean of Intelligence, Bodhisattvas who abide here act by the power of their previous actions. Even when they are not in a state of equipoise, this dedication that was previously initiated will not be in vain even in a hundred paths. O Ocean of Intelligence, therefore, some wise people understand the meaning of what is said through examples, so I will give you an example. O Ocean of Intelligence, for example, when a sugarcane field, a rice field, or a vineyard has been plowed, a person digs ditches in all the furrows as appropriate, then draws water from the canal and lets it flow, and then sleeps. Even though that person is asleep, the water will flow just as the ditches were dug. That person does not need to make effort or exert himself, and all the furrows will be filled with water. O Ocean of Intelligence, similarly, even when Bodhisattvas are not in a state of equipoise, they dedicate those roots of virtue to the mind-streams of all sentient beings, and through skillful means, they dedicate those roots of virtue to all the Buddha's teachings as they are. Because their minds are extremely pure and they completely guard the aggregates of morality, even when abiding in a state of equipoise, they dedicate those roots of virtue to all the Buddha's teachings, and because they have previously made excellent aspirations, they moisten the mind-streams of all sentient beings. O Ocean of Intelligence, you should also understand in this way that whether a Bodhisattva arises from equipoise or is in a state of equipoise, because the roots of virtue were previously initiated, and the mind is capable, mindfulness is not distracted, they are free from the Lesser Vehicle, and they have made aspirations for the Great Vehicle, therefore, even in a hundred paths, it is impossible not to dedicate the roots of virtue to all-knowing wisdom. Thus it is said. Third, the way to dedicate: First, identify the roots of virtue to be dedicated, and then explain the actual method of dedication. First, as it is said in the Vajra Banner Dedication Chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra: "All the virtues that beings have, those that have been done, are being done, and will be done." And also in the Prajnaparamita Sutra.
