Relying solely on the treatises and commentaries of the Kadampa masters, the great drum of the Dharma was sounded in all directions through the three means of debate, investigation, and reason. A Geshe said, "Although you are like a new student, you have such profound wisdom." A Geshe from the Bodongpa school asked the omniscient Rongpo, "What are you proficient in?" He replied, "I am proficient in Prajnaparamita." When asked, "Then are you proficient in Vinaya?" he replied, "Of course, that is the conduct of Prajnaparamita." When asked about Madhyamaka and Pramana, he replied in the same way, "Madhyamaka is the view, and Pramana is the path of reasoning." Just like that, you rely on Madhyamaka and Prajnaparamita to seek the framework of the teachings, and from that, you measure the tenets of the path of reasoning. If we are talking about a Geshe, then this is the kind of person we are referring to. So, he was praised in the assembly, and from then on, he was known as Geshe Sherab Ozer. Although his intellect was as sharp as thorns, such an excellent person did not rely solely on these to establish fame and gain profit. Instead, with strong renunciation and detachment moistening his mind, he kept the wheel of diligent practice in mind. In that state, when he prayed and had faith from the depths of his heart towards the biographies of Acharya Shantideva and Lord Atisha, Drikungpa Rinchen Phuntsok went to the south, and not far from Ewam, he re-established his camp. When he went to visit, he happened to be giving a common teaching on the Bodhisattvacharyavatara to about three hundred monks. From the chapter on wisdom, the three verses beginning with "Ultimate reality is not the object of consciousness," he mainly quoted the commentary of Jowo Je, and also adorned it with the path of reasoning. He also explained it in conjunction with the practices of the Kagyu school. Seeing that he was explaining it so well, the venerable one was moved by his compassion, and threw the little bit of trivial possessions that were stored in a wicker basket from the roof. Just as he was about to leave, a friend who knew medicine dissuaded him. At this time, he was eighteen years old. In general, the courage and aspiration of a holy person cannot be restrained by external forces. Like an unbridled lion soaring in the sky, he left the monastery, abandoned his friends, and renounced his possessions.

Having abandoned attachment and desire, and with only the lama who reveals the true meaning in mind, he fled like a wild animal escaping from a trap. Upon arriving in Phan-yul, he joined about forty monks, including the realized Galahwa of Drigung Yangri, who were on their alms round. At that time, Drigungpa was highly intelligent in both secular and religious matters, and seated on the throne of Thel, he had good regulations and customs, looking at things with the eyes of the previous Kyennga Chökyi Drakpa. Surrounded by a retinue of lamas and officials like an ocean, when Lhase Drigungpa Rinchen Phuntsok, whose kind face was pleasing to see, arrived to offer his respects, the arrogance of the logicians vanished, and unwavering faith stirred from the depths of his heart. Tears flowed freely, and he discarded the logicians' habit of mere debate like a snake shedding its skin. He thought, "I will entrust everything of this life and the next to him." It is said that on a mountain, he carefully examined the questions that arose spontaneously in his mind. In general, although the Kagyu lineage possesses worldly wealth, the entrance to the Dharma is narrow and not worth envying. He made all the secret disciples strictly adhere to the regulations of Jograwa. The lama said to the disciplinarian, "This Geshe of Ewampa seems to be very talented. Even if he comes to adhere to the regulations, he thinks it is the result of his own accumulation and purification," and so he made great effort for three months. He received the empowerment of Chakrasamvara with the five deities, the instructions on Mahamudra Sahajayoga, the Golden Rosary of the Kagyu, and the instructions on the Fivefold Profound Path of the Gongchik. Now he became familiar with the Chö practice of Machik Lapdron. Thinking of becoming a wandering ascetic who renounces this life, he requested it. He said, "You should not go anywhere, but stay here. I am also very familiar with Chö," and thus fulfilled his wish. The master and disciple had many discussions on the meaning of the sutras and tantras, especially the methods of explaining the views of the new and old tantras, and whether to rely on the meaning or not. They trusted each other very much. He always praised him, saying that the name "Geshe" was not mistaken, and honored him with great respect and praise, but he only took humility as his guide. At that time, in the mind of Drigungpa, he thought, "Such a person is very knowledgeable, is an ascetic, has good conduct, and is eloquent. No matter how you look at it, he is very wonderful."
