As soon as the sword was drawn from its sheath, the power of the sword caused one of the king's eyes to fall to the ground. Because of this, the king and his entourage were terrified and sought refuge. He reattached the decayed eye, for which they were extremely grateful. They offered him wealth and respect and requested him to stay, but he did not agree, instead administering the kingdom according to the Dharma and intending to establish twenty Buddhist centers, so he went to the central region (now the central part of India). The successor Khenpo of Gomi of glorious Nalanda Monastery, ordained by the king's lha, was named Shantideva. There, he stayed with the panditas, inwardly listening to the Dharma from the noble Manjushri, and attained countless doors of samadhi. He mastered the Compendium of Trainings and the Compendium of Sutras, becoming the pinnacle of scholars. But to others, he ate five large bowls of food every day, slept day and night, and like a bhiksu, did not do any hearing, thinking, or meditation. The monks said, "This fellow who harbors the thought of wasting faith offerings should be expelled." Therefore, they deliberated, "We should take turns reciting sutras and let him leave on his own." So, in the month of miracles (Tibetan New Year), they urged him to attend the occasion of reciting sutras in turn. The teacher there said, "We don't understand anything." After refusing several times, a large throne was set up in the center of the gathering. At that time, the teacher himself came and sat on the throne without hesitation, saying, "Shall I recite a sutra that has been recited before, or shall I recite one that has not been heard before?" Everyone wanted to test him, so they requested him to recite one that had not been heard before. So, he began to teach the Bodhisattvacaryavatara, starting from the phrase, "When things and non-things do not appear before the mind," gradually ascending into the sky, his body disappearing. However, accompanied by the voice of Brahma, the sound of the Dharma did not cease until the text was finished. At that time, they proclaimed in unison, "This holy being has inexhaustible wisdom!" Those panditas who had obtained dharani memorized it. The Kashmiris obtained more than a thousand verses, they composed praises with their own wisdom, and called him a person from the central region, spreading it to the east.
