To make the unawakened realize, the instructions are explained with meaning. For example, when taking jewels from the ocean, Without relying on a skilled captain, one cannot obtain them. Likewise here, without relying on a lama, one cannot realize the meaning. The lama is the embodiment of all Buddhas, The eighty-four thousand teachings are the words of the lama, The compassion of the vast Dharma nature pervades all. Without a lama, the Buddha's teachings would not arise. Therefore, accomplishment is achieved by relying on the supreme lama. In order to liberate from the Dharmakaya and benefit beings, In the impure self-appearance, in the appearance of those to be tamed, He appears in the Rupakaya and benefits beings with it. Regarding the uncertain and diverse self-thoughts, do not look at the lama's faults, but contemplate his virtues. Whatever the lama does with his body, see it as good. Whatever he says, take it as truth and follow his instructions. Whatever he thinks, believe that he knows everything. Give away all possessions and thoughts without attachment, Direct your body, speech, and mind towards the lama without regard for your life. By doing what pleases the lama and offering to him, you will be able to uphold the Buddha's teachings in this time. A person who has wrong views about the lama and breaks vows is a child of Mara, In this life, there will be obstacles and the place will be inauspicious, After death, they will go to the Vajra Hell of uninterrupted suffering. Therefore, by relying on the lama with respect, Just as sandalwood and camphor emit fragrance upon contact, Merely relying and respecting will bring blessings. The meaning of self-arisen Dharma nature will effortlessly arise. The essential instructions of the lama who possesses essence, are for the worthy disciple who fears birth and death, and turns his back on the worldly dharmas of samsara. The number of disciples should not exceed one, seven, or nine. Abandon all worldly affairs, In a deserted charnel ground, mountain cave, or secluded place, Teach the Dharma that gives rise to impermanence and renunciation, With skillful instructions, realize the meaning of wisdom. With wisdom instructions, realize the meaning of skillful means. Realize the great wisdom that is non-dual and free from extremes. Like water drawn from a canal, there is no possibility of error in the ground of Dzogchen. The preliminary instruction is to place the mind on the scales, Like the sun rising in a cloudless sky, the meaning of Dharma nature will be clearly revealed. The main instruction is to settle the nature of the mind, Like a traveler returning to his own homeland from a journey. The subsequent instruction is to apply the fruit to practice, By practicing virtue in the beginning, middle, and end, the Great Perfection is effortless, spontaneously accomplished, and manifestly enlightened. Thus he spoke. Complete.

From the Tantra of the Great Accomplisher, the All-Liberating King: Chapter Eight, A Summary of Essential Instructions. Self-Arisen Wisdom Vajra again requested: Emaho! Blessed, spontaneously accomplished, uncreated glory! To explain the three meanings of essential instructions, How does one initially show the preliminary practices with key points? Please explain this meaning to the assembled retinue. Thus he requested. Then, the Blessed One spoke: First, there are two types of preliminary practices: common and special. The common preliminary practice is towards the refuge field, the Lama, With the thought of oneself and others attaining the unsurpassed fruit, With heartfelt devotion from the three gates, Praying to the embodiment of all Sugatas, The Lama, Buddha, protector of beings, supreme refuge, Until I and all sentient beings attain Buddhahood, With reverence, I take refuge in body, speech, and mind. By reciting these words and understanding their meaning, one takes refuge and prays, Clearing obstacles and receiving blessings. For the mother sentient beings dwelling in the six realms, With compassion exchanging one's own happiness and suffering with others, May they attain happiness and be free from suffering, and attain Buddhahood, Generate the supreme Bodhicitta of equality. From the liberation of self-interest arises the benefit of others and the welfare of beings. Second, the special preliminary practice is the instructions for distinguishing between samsara and nirvana through body, speech, and mind: Distinguishing the boundary of the body is circumambulation and, Assuming the vajra posture and tightening the body with discipline. This generates aversion to the body of samsara. Distinguishing the boundary of speech is Hūṃ(藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum) Phaṭ(藏文:ཕཊ,梵文天城体:फट,梵文罗马拟音:phaṭ,汉语字面意思:Phat) and, Not speaking, being inexpressible, like a mute, holding the breath forcefully. This reverses attachment to the speech of samsara. Distinguishing the boundary of mind is weariness and, Focusing on a fixed target without distraction. This generates aversion to the mind of samsara. Tightening with discipline is the suffering of samsara. This distinguishes the boundary of samsara. After that, Abandoning the effort of the body, all actions. In a state of non-action, the grasping of the body is emptied. When grasping arises, bliss arises in the body. Abandoning the effort of speech, all speech and expression. In a state of inexpressibility, the grasping of speech disappears. Abandoning the effort of mind, all objects of focus. In a state of non-focus, the grasping of mind disappears. Body, speech, and mind naturally go in bliss. Loosening and relaxing is the bliss of nirvana. By loosening and liberating, one distinguishes the boundary of nirvana. By this, the individual completes the accumulations.
