For meditators, there are three pitfalls. If one meditates on equanimity and selflessness, one will stray into the appearance of emptiness and the appearance of darkness. If one meditates on the syllables of Samadhi, one will stray into the realm of attachment and clinging to Samsara. If one meditates on non-conceptual emptiness, one will stray into a nihilistic, extremist view. Although there are countless such pitfalls, they are all encompassed within the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Although there are no pitfalls or obscurations in reality, for the yogi on the path, the three—bad places, bad friends, and bad environments— are said to be the three great pitfalls. Tough mouth, empty belly, and bad nature, the five poisons and three poisons grow like leaves. These are the pitfalls of one's own nature. When one engages in practice, because one is seized by obstructing demons, cut off all the pitfalls of demons. The three demons—outer, inner, and secret— for male practitioners, it is the female demon, for female practitioners, it is the male demon, attachment is the demon for both. Everything is due to clinging to the appearances of this life itself. When the four root demons are cut off, then all pitfalls are cut off. The Dharmakaya is free from clinging and partiality, free from the demon of characteristics and pitfalls of obscuration. From the quintessential Great Expanse Tantra of the Great Vehicle, the forty-sixth chapter, "Cutting Off Pitfalls," is complete. Samaya. Seal, seal, seal.

The realm of earth. The inner realm gathered by the mind. Those aspects of the realms, Holding all objects is delusion. The aggregates with conceptualization, Gather all things into one. This aggregate without conceptualization, Is meditative concentration, samadhi. The sense bases are the apprehended and the apprehender, two aspects. The apprehended sense bases are twelve, The apprehender sense bases are also twelve. The faculties grasp the aspect of form, Wisdom grasps the aspect of faculties. The objects are the objects of things and, The two objects that are without things. All object-possessors are completely pure. "Pure" means the exhaustion of phenomena. The afflictions are six, Namely, ignorance, delusion, hatred, Pride, desire, and jealousy. The nature of the dying moment is, The elements are disturbed by the causes of death and illness. The suffering of body, speech, and mind, From the bursting forth of the ocean of clinging and attachment, Due to the fear of separation of body and mind, The suffering is extremely coarse, Confusion and dizziness, Consciousness does not abide in one place. The nature of the Dharmata Bardo is, Without aggregates and separated from defilements. The peaceful bodies and the wrathful bodies, The light of wisdom and colors, The increase of bindus and the purification of elemental appearances, All appearances are great bliss realms, Self-appearance is pure, all appears, Whatever appears is the Dharmata palace. The nature of the Sridpa Bardo is, Having separated from the body of flesh and blood, With the illusory mind-body, One does not see the true meaning of Dharmata, Frightened by all the lights, The mind wanders throughout the three thousand worlds, Like a feather carried by the wind, Fluttering, wavering, unsteady and unstable. Confusion, dizziness, like a dream, Unable to stay in one place, feeling agitated. Where to arrive, etc., the lights of the six realms, The respective objects appear. The boundary of the birth-place Bardo is, From birth until the causes of death, Being struck by illness. The dying Bardo is from being afflicted by illness, Until the inner breath ceases. The Dharmata Bardo is from the cessation of breath, Until the spontaneous appearances arise. The boundary of the Sridpa Bardo is, From the complete dissolution of spontaneous appearances, Until entering the womb. The manner of appearance, showing the four key points of the instructions, Regarding the nature of the birth-place Bardo, One should determine the category of what is to be known. Regarding the dying mother Bardo, One should clarify the various instructions. Regarding the Dharmata peaceful and wrathful Bardo.
