They are called the five faculties because they have power to generate faith and so on. The faculty of faith obtains power over faith. Mindfulness obtains power over mindfulness. Samadhi obtains power over samadhi. Wisdom obtains power over wisdom. Samadhi and wisdom are faculties, while faith, diligence, mindfulness, equanimity, and wisdom are strengths. Pañcabala means: pañca is five, and bala is strength. These five faculties, such as faith, when cultivated continuously for a long time, the five opposing factors, such as lack of faith, laziness, loss of mindfulness, distraction, and non-intelligence, cannot hinder them, so they generate the power of faith and so on, which are the five strengths. The five strengths are: the strength of faith, the strength of mindfulness, the strength of diligence, the strength of samadhi, and the strength of wisdom. They are respectively the antidotes to lack of faith, forgetfulness, laziness, distraction, and non-intelligence. Why is it called the path of joining? Because it joins the path of seeing from the heat, the peak, the forbearance, and the supreme mundane dharma. Because the apprehended is without inherent existence, it is heat. The noble path wants to burn the firewood of afflictions. Believing in this and being the peak of the roots of virtue, it is the peak. Because it can endure the non-inherent existence of what is grasped, and can endure the arising and ceasing of contaminated things, it is forbearance. Because of believing in this, it is the supreme mundane dharma, because it has become more sacred than other mundane dharmas. If we consider the path and the ground as having similar dharmas, then the path of accumulation and the path of joining are called the ground of ordinary beings. Heat, peak, forbearance, supreme, join the ten. Uṣṇagata means: when it is in accordance with the part of definite discrimination, the noble path burns all the trees of afflictions, so like fire, heat arises first, so it is called heat. Mūrdhana means: because the previous virtue is not stable and is at the peak of shaking, it is called the peak. Kṣānti means: forbearance towards the truth is divided into superior, medium, and inferior, among which it possesses the superior, so it will not decline, nor will it fall into the lower realms, so it is forbearance. Laukikāgradharma means: this ground is also a mundane dharma, and it is like the noble path that has never been seen before. It is also different from the mundane dharma. The supreme of the mundane dharma can obtain things equal to it without cause, so it is called the supreme of the mundane dharma. The path to be cultivated.

Here, the seven branches of enlightenment are called Saptabodhyanga (藏文,梵文天城体,Saptabodhyanga,Seven Factors of Enlightenment). Sapta (藏文,梵文天城体,sapta,Seven) means seven, Bodhi (藏文,梵文天城体,bodhi,Enlightenment) means enlightenment, and Anga (藏文,梵文天城体,anga,Branch) means branch. They are mindfulness, discrimination of phenomena, diligence, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity. These seven, in the path of seeing, become the cause for realizing the true nature of enlightenment, hence they are called the seven branches of enlightenment. Furthermore, they are merely described in the order of enumeration by name. These seven are the proximate cause for accomplishing the three enlightenments, hence they are called the branches of enlightenment on the path of cultivation. Mindfulness, Dharma, diligence, joy, tranquility, concentration, equanimity, these are the seven branches. The branch of right mindfulness is not forgetting the object of focus. Discrimination of phenomena is distinguishing between what is as it is and what is as much as it is. The branch of diligence is what enables one to transcend samsara. The branch of joy is what benefits the three aspects of body, speech, and mind. Tranquility is when the mind is workable. The branch of concentration is when the mind is one-pointed. The branch of equanimity is the antidote to the belief in inherent existence. Why is it the path of cultivation? Because one repeatedly familiarizes oneself with the meaning of the nature of reality, hence it is the path of cultivation. The path of cultivation is the first ground, the Joyful Ground! In the path of seeing, the path of the noble ones is the eightfold path. Aryastangamarga (藏文,梵文天城体,Aryastangamarga,Noble Eightfold Path) is, Arya (藏文,梵文天城体,Arya,Noble) means noble, Astanga (藏文,梵文天城体,astanga,Eight Limbs) means eight limbs, and Marga (藏文,梵文天城体,marga,Path) means path. They are right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. With these eight noble paths of cultivation, one attains the fruit of Arhatship, hence it is called the Eight Noble Paths. Or rather, because it is the fruit of the noble ones, and the path that enables one to see the thusness that was previously unheard of, hence it is said to be the path of seeing. Seeing, thought, speech, and the boundary of action, with right view, one manifests the path of seeing. With right thought, one does not speak without thinking. With speech, one teaches the Dharma that tames whatever needs taming. With the boundary of bodily action, one does not do what is inappropriate. With right livelihood, one can also be content with resources. With right effort, the effort that is encompassed by view arises. With right mindfulness, there is no dullness or excitement in tranquility. With right concentration, one abides in meditation and manifests it. Why is it the path of seeing? Because one sees the meaning that was previously unseen, hence it is the path of seeing. The ground is the second ground.
