Phenomena such as forms are conventional truths because they are refuted by reason. The consciousness that apprehends, obstructs, and enjoys through the sense organs such as the eye is not an ultimate truth because it is refuted by the wisdom that cuts off elaboration. Appearances that are vague and indistinct are conventional truths because they are deceptive, and so on, there are many. Function, cognizing object, manifestation, and faculty have eight distinctions. First, the ability or inability to perform a function: it is established even by a temporary valid cognition. The ability to perform a temporary function is a true conventional truth. It is established even by a temporary valid cognition. The inability to perform a function is false. Second, the presence or absence of conceptualization: that which is non-conceptual is a true conventional truth. That which is conceptual, with an object as an object, is false. Third, if reason dominates, reason as an object is a true conventional truth. That which is not so is individually false. Fourth, clarity or obscurity: if it appears clearly, it is true. If it appears obscurely, it is false. Fifth, meaninglessness: the mere appearance of something that is not nonexistent is true. Attachment to a nonexistent meaning is false. Sixth, the basis of the faculty: that which directly relies on its own faculty is true. That which deviates from that is a false conventional truth. Seventh, the object: if the appearance of this object is consistent at this time, and the consciousness is not attached, if it can be produced by a rope, it is a true conventional truth. That which is not so is false. Eighth, the four characteristics of conventional truth: it appears consistently, it can perform a function, it is produced from causes and conditions, it is a true conventional truth. If examined, it is empty, it is a false conventional truth. Differentiate the differences between the two conventional truths. A pot appears and can perform a function. Examples of appearances that can perform a function are pots and so on. A pot appears and can perform the function of a water container and so on. It appears but cannot function, a rope is a snake. Examples of appearances that cannot perform a function are a rope mistaken for a snake, and a mound mistaken for a person. Therefore, it cannot perform that function. It appears and does not appear, and cannot perform a function. These are the four nonexistent things: a rabbit's horn, a barren woman's son, a turtle's hair, and a sky flower. And so on, oil from sand, lion's saliva, and so on, are numerous. It is. The characteristic of the ultimate truth is: all elaborations
