Request. World Honored One, are phenomena and what is called the nature of phenomena in phenomena, or is it that itself? Answer: Great Assembly, do you think that what is called the nature of phenomena is phenomena themselves? World Honored One, it is not. Answer: Great Assembly, if you think that there is a nature of phenomena other than phenomena, is that so? Request. World Honored One, it is not. Answer: Son of good family, it is so. It is so, what is called the nature of phenomena is neither phenomena themselves, nor is it other than phenomena. If, with regard to phenomena, one examines well with what, then one does not attend to dharma and non-dharma, arising and ceasing, existence and non-existence, extremes and middle, color is not attended to, shape is not attended to. 665 ༄༅། །Non-attention to consciousness, this is the nature of phenomena. Non-attention to emptiness and non-emptiness, non-attention to self and life and nourishment, etc., this is the nature of phenomena. Great Assembly, therefore, do not grasp at the characteristics of all phenomena. Why is that? Whoever grasps at characteristics, whether coarse or subtle, abiding in this, abides in the net of conceptualization. Therefore, abandon separation from conceptualization. Therefore, abide at the edge of characteristics. Therefore, one revolves in samsara. Therefore, one experiences all the sufferings of samsara. Therefore, do not grasp at the characteristics of all phenomena. If one does not grasp at characteristics, then one will be separated from all characteristics. Therefore, one will obtain the realm of dharma. Therefore, one will abandon all the faults of samsara. Great Assembly. Therefore, the past Buddha named Vairochana also spoke this verse: Whoever sees phenomena as non-existent and not abiding, sees the non-abiding as abiding, that is a cyclical being. Always dwelling in the place of diligence, with the enemy of wrong thought, he has abandoned other ways of going. 666 Great Assembly. The Buddha of the past named Victory Banner also said this: Things do not need phenomena, names and words.

Completely free from all letters, abandoning all faults of discrimination, thus it is said. Great assembly of beings, therefore, all the Buddhas of the past, countless and beyond measure, have also spoken countless and immeasurable verses. From the King of Tantras, the Play of the Wrathful Horse King, the fifty-seventh chapter, the chapter on the absence of characteristics. Then again, the Bhagavan Lotus Dance自在, entered into the samadhi of the Wrathful Offering's Various Arrangements, and spoke thus: "Whatever appearances there are, which completely pacify, these supreme rituals are completely abiding in all secrets. Like the lord of life itself, from which all desires arise, that will be completely abiding. The nature of illusory secrets." Thus it is said. Then again, the Bhagavan Lotus Dance自在, entered into the extremely secret samadhi, and spoke thus: "Alas, the extremely secret is vast, because it is the lord of all secrets. All desires are completely, without obstruction, accomplished. Whoever can tame and subdue, body, speech, and mind are perfectly vast, all supreme secrets, constantly abide in their own nature." Thus it is said. Then again, the Bhagavan Lotus Dance自在, entered into the samadhi called Playful Wonder, and spoke thus: "The all-supreme wheel-turning自在, the extremely secret is supremely vast, the wisdom mind of all Buddhas, other secrets are unsurpassed. Here is the treasure of all qualities, all inconceivable. Merely holding this, countless supreme accomplishments will arise. From that, constant benefit, needless to mention the insurmountable qualities. Protector, great bliss in the three times, the great secret Dharma universally arises. Whoever hears this extremely secret, will burn away afflictions. By what and with what combination, what Bodhicitta merit is generated, that one will constantly attain bliss. The supreme above the supreme, the vows of all Buddhas, when completely abiding in this, needless to mention other transforming qualities. Wherever it appears, like the jewel on the crown of a hundred givers, it is extremely supreme."
