From the perspective of disposition, there are two types: good and bad. The good is like white cotton cloth, while the bad is like black. Just as white can be dyed with colors, it is capable of receiving merit, while black cannot be changed. That is to say, a good student is like white cloth, giving rise to wisdom like golden yellow dye, capable of receiving and grasping the oral instructions. This is what the Buddha spoke of when examining the hair. With faith, one does not spare life, body, and possessions, but gives them away. The examination of faith is divided into two types: common and specific. The first is not being attached to body, life, and possessions, but giving them away for the sake of the Dharma. The specific has five aspects: the essence is the arising of joy. The definition is believing and being respectful. The classification has three types: the initial faith is respecting the three doors of body, speech, and mind of the lama; the confident faith is being unwavering and steadfast; the desiring faith is desiring oral instructions. The merit is that after encountering the white Dharma, one transforms the mind from black. Entering the secret mantra and not retreating, this is bestowing faith upon the steadfast. Respect the lama's body, and joy arises, respect speech and mind. The yidam is confidence, the Dharma is desire, and those who do not retreat and are steadfast are of this kind. When listening, it is not just hearing the sound, without the fault of an overturned vessel, and knowing the meaning of steadfastness, understanding well. With four wisdoms, eliminate the four faults of the vessel. By striving with the wisdom of listening, there is no fault of an overturned vessel. This is listening only to the sound, it is the time of learning. An overturned vessel cannot hold essence. Thinking makes sound and meaning without defilement. By being diligent with the wisdom of thinking, there is no fault of a vessel with defilement. Thinking considers both sound and meaning, for example, just as essence cannot be poured into a vessel with defilement. Abandon evil thoughts and listen. Meditation is diligent, sound and meaning can also remove poison. By being diligent with the wisdom of meditation, one abandons faults like a vessel with poison, even if one pours in poison, it is useless. Meditation is meditating by focusing solely on meaning. Being able to keep secrets is like having a leaky bottom and being mute. The wisdom of secrecy is being able to keep secrets, thereby abandoning the fault of a vessel with a leaky bottom. Just as essence leaks from a vessel with a leaky bottom. One must keep secret the profound oral instructions of secret mantra. Words and actions are vows. Four certainties: certainty in words without addition or subtraction, certainty in faith without weariness, certainty in actions without laxity, vows.

It is certain without error, and the oral instructions are taught to those who possess all five qualities. Being endowed with them, it is like this. Just as from fertile ground, the basis for the ripening of the crops of accomplishment. Like that, it is like planting any seed in fertile ground and it ripens. For a disciple with a good foundation, teaching profound instructions like seeds will ripen the fruit of unsurpassed enlightenment. That is, on the ground of mind itself, endowed with wisdom, planting the seed of good instructions will ripen the crops of the two kinds of accomplishments. The disciple's mind also has eight aspects. The disciple's mind has eight characteristics: First, a faithful disciple is like a field, the basis for the arising of all qualities and the ripening of fruit; second, one who has diligence is like a whip, urging on endless virtuous Dharma and becoming a companion for generating special experiences of realization; third, one who has devotion is like a vajra in the lower part of the body, like gravel, and whatever body, speech, or mind generates devotion, the merit of blessings will arise like a stream of water, without interruption; fourth, one who has generosity is like entrusting, not despising the kindness of the lama, and making one's own enjoyment meaningful; fifth, one who has patience is like a river, not retaliating against the attacks of others, and keeping the mind respectful to the lama's activities; sixth, one who has lineage is like a king, not engaging in lowly affairs, and subduing others with dignified conduct; seventh, one who has fearlessness is like a lion, subduing all evil views and not being afraid of the profound Dharma, and they also have no timidity or fear; eighth, one who does not turn back is like throwing a stone into the ocean, and after certainty arises in the meaning of the oral instructions, without doubt or hesitation, the three bodies bring the intention to completion. The field of faith, the whip of diligence, the gravel of devotion, the entrustment of generosity, patience, lineage, endowed with fearlessness, abiding in non-retrogression. To that lineage holder,
