Asked: What is the true definitive meaning of the three logical reasons of example, meaning, and sign? Replied: The nature of reality, wisdom, is self-arisen. The example is like the sky, vast and all-pervading. It opens understanding, is unchanging, and has no fixed identity. The meaning is the unconditioned nature of reality, untouched by extremes, without substance. The sign is the self-arisen, self-aware mind, unobscured, self-luminous, and free from grasping. That itself is the intention of the Buddha. Again asked: What are the three logical reasons of essence, nature, and great self? Replied: The meaning of the three logical reasons of essence, nature, and great self is explained as follows: From the very beginning, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana have the nature of reality, with pure imprints. Its play and power are unceasing, diverse, undistracted, and are its nature. From the samsara and nirvana of the self-arisen mind, the all-pervading Buddha is the great self. From the unconditioned nature of reality, self-aware wisdom is its nature. From the unborn, pure essence, the play of power and appearance is its nature. The single bindu is the great self. By the unconditioned essence of mind itself, formless fear is self-purified. By the self-luminous nature of mind itself, attachment to the form realm is self-liberated. By the all-pervading self of mind itself, attachment to the desire realm is self-pacified. Again asked: What are the three essential doors of all phenomena? Please explain in detail. Replied: The meaning of the so-called three essentials is the essence of existence and non-existence. Without substance, without characteristics, nothing appears. It is nothing at all, without foundation. Unconditioned, it is the essence of non-existence, like a colored crystal that is not changed by its surroundings. By realizing or not realizing it, the phenomena of samsara and nirvana arise as self-appearance. Whatever appears is the essence of existence, like the color of a colored crystal reflecting its surroundings. The self-arisen mind itself is perfectly true. It is nothing at all, and yet everything appears. Appearing but not truly existent, non-dual and one, the essence of meaning is like a colored crystal. Again asked: What is the root and basis of all the Buddha's teachings? Replied: The root and basis of the Buddha's teachings is the view, the basis of the essence of nature. Like the sky, it has no partiality. Samadhi is undistracted and unrelated to external objects. Like the sun, it is clear without obscuration. Conduct is equal without acceptance or rejection. Like the sky, it is in the realm of miraculous manifestations.
