That is abiding. Regarding the method of abiding, there are two: the great faculties rely on the power of wisdom, and the small faculties rely on the power of pith instructions. In the former, again, By the power of pith instructions and wisdom, one abides and becomes familiar. (This means) The first is further divided into: awareness being universally poured out, and abiding after the view. The first is: merely by contemplating, thinking, and remembering the nature of reality as free from elaboration, awareness vividly abides in no object of focus. As it says in the Six Successive [Practices]: Since there is no object to be thought of, the self-knowing that is free from grasping and being grasped, spontaneously appears in a way that is without focus. This is said to be the supreme of meditation. Thus it is said. The second is: if one does not like to abide, then remembering the previously realized view, in that state, one abides at the moment when clarity is not lost. As it says in that [text]: Since seeing the nature is without effort, the samadhi that accords with it also makes clarity. That is also said to be the supreme of means. Thus it is said. The second is: whichever of the previous two methods of abiding one abides in, a person of small faculties who does not like to abide should listen to the pith instructions from the lama and abide. What are the pith instructions? When meditating, if one looks inward at one's own mind, one does not see the nature of the mind at all. Not seeing anything at all is called seeing the nature of reality. As it says in The Rootless Nature of Mind, up to: It is neither abiding nor anything at all, suchness is the realm of wisdom. When one abides in this way, the emptiness of non-conceptuality is Samantabhadri, the wisdom of the meaning of the nature of reality; the aspect of self-knowing clarity and appearance is Samantabhadra, the wisdom of the ground of the dharmakaya. That is, the wisdom of the innate union of the realm of wisdom, or the inconceivable wisdom of Samantabhadra. Therefore, abiding in that state without losing [clarity], as it says, By what means is the mind like a drunken elephant, tamed by abiding in equanimity? The mind that is intoxicated by various kinds of delusion and conceptualization is tamed by either of the two methods of abiding, so that scattering decreases and stability increases, and awareness abides effortlessly, clearly and immovably in no object of focus. Likewise, the teacher Jnana Palayang said: For whatever is to be accomplished, one repeatedly abides in equanimity with diligence, and familiarity becomes like a river, and the breadth of the pith instructions is spontaneously accomplished without effort. Thus

So! How to cultivate the stages of the five bodhicitta-endowed practices: First, the mind stirs and arises without error; then, gradually aspiring to attain and clarify it; entering into that meaning; abiding and becoming familiar with it; and finally reaching completion, arising without seeking. Furthermore, from the perspective of realizing the meaning of abiding and emptiness of inherent existence, the union of calm abiding and insight meditation subdues the head of afflictions and uproots them. Thus, it is said in Yeshe Gyapa (Expansion of Wisdom): "Calm abiding subdues the head of afflictions, and supreme insight meditation thoroughly uproots them." Thus, when engaging in samadhi, if faults such as dullness and excitement arise, eliminate them with instructions and meditate. Then, experience the five experiences of stirring, attainment, familiarity, stability, and completion, as well as the warmth of outer, inner, and secret experiences. Signs of various kinds will appear. As it is said in the Stages of the Path: "Combine like mirages, smoke, fireflies, butter lamps, and sunlight." Although this is considered an analogy for the stages of experience during the generation stage, seeing signs here is not contradictory. For in the tantra that clarifies the net of conceptualization, which is the latter of the latter, it is said: "Please, Bhagavan, what are the signs of those yogis?" The answer is: "Son of lineage, the first ones are the transmission, and the signs of the result are also in stages, namely five. What are the five? They are smoke, mirage, firebrand, butter lamp, and like the clear sky. These are the distinctions of the signs of the stages. Son of lineage, the second is direct perception, and the stages of the result are also direct perception." Thus it is said. In short, it is said in the extensive treatises: "If you see the meaning of no signs, you will see the mandala of all the Buddhas." Thus it is said. Fourth, the time is: From samadhi, when dawn arises, one engages in the activities of subsequent conduct. Therefore, samadhi should only be cultivated during the time of samadhi. It is said in this very text: "Having subdued with samadhi." Thus it is said. Fifth, the fault is: If there is no samadhi, even if the basis of view is good, it will not be accomplished. As it is said in the Stages of the Path: "If there is no samadhi, like a boulder at the bottom of the ocean, even if you strive on the path for eons, it is meaningless, a dried-up essence." Thus it is said. Sixth, the quality is: Whatever is to be accomplished is accomplished by samadhi. Like precious
