Among these two, the first is the twelve external dependent arisings, which revolve in a manner of more and less. Furthermore, the 'Important Treatise' states: 'The external is six related to cause, similarly, six related to condition.' Therefore, the six related to cause are: from a seed sprouts a shoot, and then successively a trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits; like this, the former gives rise to the latter, which is the manner of revolving in abundance. If the few are compared to a round stone, it is said that all six are like itself. Secondly, the six related to condition are the five elements and the change of time. Thus, these six dharmas related to cause, relying on the six conditions and so forth, perform actions and generate these worlds of objects and containers that appear as external. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: 'Mahamati, just as pottery arises from a lump of clay, cloth from thread, lacquerware from resin, sprouts from seeds, and the efforts of humans such as spindles, and butter arises from yogurt, so too, Mahamati, external dependent arising is the arising of the latter from the former.' Thus it is said. Secondly, internal dependent arising has characteristics, divisions, and summaries. First, it is something that does not arise without it and is established by relying on it. The 'Important Treatise' states: 'Because this exists, this arises; because this is born, this is born; because of the cause of the former, the latter arises.' Thus it is said. Secondly, there are differences in essence and meaning, and how they revolve. The first is the twelve links beginning with ignorance. The second is from the Dzogchen Tantra 'Self-Arisen Awareness': 'Also arising from ignorance, from ignorance arises formation, formation is consciousness, consciousness does not arise, from name arises the nature of form, from form arises the six sense sources, the six sense sources

Through intention, accumulating virtuous and non-virtuous actions, or manifestly performing them, is action. These actions are accumulated on the consciousness that possesses continuity, and it is the consciousness that carries them to the next life. When it enters the place of birth, together with the four aggregates of feeling, etc., and the form that is transformed from the four great elements, the nature of the five aggregates, name and form, is formed. It gradually grows, and the six internal sense bases, such as the eye, emerge. From this arises contact, the union of object, faculty, and consciousness; from this arises feeling, the experience of pleasure and pain; from this arises craving, the desire to obtain pleasure and the desire to abandon suffering; from this arises grasping, the effort to engage in actions of taking and rejecting through the three doors; nourished by this, the karmic imprints become capable of taking rebirth, which is existence. From this arises future birth, and if there is birth, there is aging, the change of age; sickness, the change of elements; and death, the change of life. Therefore, the wheel of the twelve links of dependent origination turns without interruption, and it is called samsara. These are also completed in three lifetimes: ignorance, action, and consciousness, because they are the projectors of birth, belong to the previous life; the seven from name and form to existence are completed in the intermediate life, of which the first four are of the nature of fruition, and the latter three arise from the conditions of those fruitions. Birth and aging and death are completed in the future life, because the end of this life is existence, and from its condition arises birth, and from birth arises aging and death. As Nagarjuna said: From the three, two arise; from the two, seven arise; from the seven, three also arise, which is the wheel of existence, which itself revolves again and again. Thus it is. These are also called connected with cause from the perspective that the former gives rise to the latter, and connected with condition because they are produced by the aggregation of the five internal elements and consciousness, i.e., the six elements, as it is said in the Salu Ljangwa Sutra: Internal dependent origination arises from two causes, what are the two? They are connected with cause and connected with condition. And so on, extensively explained. If summarized into three, they are ignorance, existence, and grasping, which are the afflictions.
