Thus, examine the appearance of clinging to true existence in cyclic existence and nirvana. Third, if you say that even past dharmas become mistaken conceptions because they are the basis of examination, the answer is that it is not pervasive in its own characteristics, but it is admitted in the aspect of clinging. Why? Because the past has not become an object of designation, and the self-nature of cyclic existence is false due to delusion. Since both self-natures are equally unsuitable as objects of measurement, there is no fault in measuring them by the appearance of clinging. Therefore, there is no fault in measuring the appearance of clinging. So it is said. Then, are the appearances of clinging to cyclic existence and nirvana measured separately? No, they are not. From the perspective of appearance, it is a rope, but from the perspective of clinging, it is like clinging to a snake. From the perspective of appearance, it is the past, but from the perspective of clinging, the collection that clings to cyclic existence is the object of measurement. Second, in the Three Successive Stages, it is said: The dharmas taught as the two bases of examination are cyclic existence and nirvana. Therefore, it is the determination of the dharma of cyclic existence and the determination of the dharma of nirvana. First, in the Heart Drop, it is said: The basis of delusion, the manner of delusion, and the nature itself should be completely understood by combining them. Therefore, from what is the basis of delusion, how is the manner of delusion, and the nature of delusion is not moved from the nature of reality, and it is repeated. In the first, there are three: negation, establishment, and abandonment. First, some, such as Nyak Benjung, say that delusion arises from a basis of delusion that has always existed, which is unreasonable. In the Heart Drop, it is said: Those individuals who are controlled by imputation, for whom the nature of mind is without an object, who say that things are based on their own nature, their lineage will always fall. Therefore, four faults remain. First, delusion, which is self-existent, becomes permanent because delusion arises from a basis of delusion that has always existed. If the sign is not established, the vow is broken. If you admit it, in the Stages of the Path, it is said: Because the self-nature of cyclic existence is not perceived. So it is clear. The second fault is that the basis falls into the extreme of cyclic existence because there is a basis of delusion. If you admit it, it is said in that very text: Self-nature is naturally inseparable. So it is clear. The third fault is that the three, hearing, thinking, and meditating, cannot eliminate delusion because the basis of delusion is always perceived. If you admit it, in the Root Tantra, it is said: By the combination of hearing, thinking, and meditating, the self-arisen, coemergent great seal is spontaneously accomplished. So it is clear. The fourth fault is that the basis becomes the object of grasping and the object of being grasped because there has always been a basis of delusion. If you admit it, in the Three Successive Stages, it is said:

Free from all extremes. As it says in the Extensive Treatise: 'The wisdom free from grasping and being grasped.' This is clear. Some say: 'Even without a basis for delusion, delusion arises.' This is unreasonable. As it says in the Heart Drop: 'The deluded one is spontaneously accomplished, and those who disagree understand separately. For them, this is impossible. They say that it is originally absent on the ground. It exists in the face of clinging mind. Observe what is delusion. These two are different, and the impossible arises initially.' Because it is harmed by four faults. What are they? First, the co-emergent ignorance is not established, because there is no basis for delusion. If you accept, as it says in the Needle: 'The absence of arising of definite knowledge is co-emergent ignorance.' Second, the ground falls into the extreme of nirvana, because there is no basis for delusion. If you accept, 'Nirvana also does not exist.' This harms it. Third, samsara would have a beginning, because delusion arises from the absence of a basis for delusion. If you accept, as it says in the General Sutra: 'Samsara has no beginning and no end.' Fourth, even Buddhas with pure continuums would have delusions, because delusion arises suddenly even if it is absent on the ground. If you accept, as it says in the Heart Drop: 'The Thus-gone One is merely liberated from various attachments.' Some say: 'Delusion arises from the non-distinction of the existence and non-existence of a basis for delusion.' This is also unreasonable, because the nature of the ground is originally pure, and delusion is a sudden stain. Second, regarding the two broad and narrow statements of our own system, the first is: Delusion arises from all three of the existence, non-existence, and non-distinction of a basis for delusion, not merely from any one of them. Therefore, delusion also arises from the existence of a basis for delusion, just as the knowledge of grasping a snake arises from a rope because there is a snake. As it says in the teachings of Aro Yeshe Jungne: 'Without a basis for delusion, delusion does not arise, just as it does not arise without truth.' Here, Lama Dewa Chenpo said: 'There is no delusion on the ground, but delusion has a ground, just as a rope is mistaken for a snake.' He distinguished it in this way. Also, delusion arises from the absence of a basis for delusion, just as strands of hair fall from the sky in the vision of someone with cataracts. This is also very clear.
