If that's the case, when you point at the moon with your finger to see it, you will definitely see the moon's own characteristic. You will see the own characteristic from the beginning. If you say that it cannot be used as an example of seeing the general characteristic, that's fine. Because even if you directly point out the real moon to a child who is not familiar with symbols, it will point to the general characteristic, just like later, when they see the moon in the water, they will have a cognition of that moon. Although it is explained with profound words by the signifier and the signified, ordinary people and those with false concepts cannot understand it as it is said. Therefore, first establish a general concept in the mind, and then through the certainty cognition guided by faith, gradually understand the profound meanings of what is to be expressed, which is undoubtedly established. Third, for the valid cognition that determines the basis, there are also three. In terms of scripture, it is said in the Extensive Treatise: "The true appearance, conventional truth, ultimate truth, as well as non-duality and the three, these three themselves are clearly manifested in an equal way." In terms of instructions, it is said in the Stages of the Path: "This also establishes the three states." In terms of reasoning, as the basis of reality or nature, it can be determined as the three truths, because it appears in a non-mixed form as duality with opposites, and the nature is inseparably completely perfect, which even the omniscient cannot deny. As it is said in the Five Stages: "Conventional and ultimate, each part is understood, wherever they are correctly mixed, that is explained as union." And in the Commentary on the Bodhicitta, it is also said: "Conventional is explained as emptiness, emptiness itself is conventional, just like conditioned phenomena and impermanence, because without it, it will not arise." Second, regarding the basis for examination, there are two: determining the characteristics and establishing it. First, there are three: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. The first is that most of the old school people say, "Because it is examined with the mind of the path, it is the basis for examination." If that's the case, the path will also become the basis for examination, just like a mirage doesn't need a dam, because it is fabricated by the mind, so the entity to be abandoned is not established. Practicing the path will also become meaningless. Also, the Supreme Sugata said, "It is the basis for examination by the wisdom of discernment." If that's the case, because it is the object of examination by wisdom, the base, path, and result will all become that, which is unreasonable. The second is the appearance of clinging to a distorted perception from something that is not truly established in reality, which is in the Stages of the Path.
