From this point, I will demonstrate the good conduct of a qualified vessel, giving away body and possessions. Thus it is said. Therefore, in the extensive (scriptures) it says: The realm of the Thus-Gone One (Sanskrit, Tathāgata), is realized by those with great intelligence. Therefore, this profound tantra is not the realm of the dull-witted, but the realm of the sharp-witted. Therefore, it is very reasonable that the commentary says that one who possesses the three qualities of wisdom, etc., is a qualified vessel. Furthermore, sharp-wittedness is divided into: natural sharp-wittedness and cultivated sharp-wittedness. The first is: As it says in the same text: Vast and extensive, deep and profound, it is realized by profound wisdom. Thus it is said. The second is: As it says in this very text: Those with eyes of wisdom, who have diligently trained in listening, thinking, and meditating, will grasp it. Thus it is said. Moreover, when a lama teaches the Dharma to a student, he should first carefully examine whether the student possesses the qualities and faults of a vessel by five means. As it says in the Lamrim: By distant inquiry, close observation, divination, dakinis, secret mantra omens, and reproaches, if it is determined that he is a virtuous vessel, then with unwavering steadfastness, the teacher entrusts the disciple to him. This means inquiring from others from a distance, examining the goodness or badness of his lineage, the gentleness or harshness of his mind, the greatness or smallness of his faith and generosity, etc.; observing himself from nearby; observing through divination and oracles, etc.; praying to the dakinis to see if he is suitable for teaching; and especially examining through assigning tasks and verbal disputes, etc. If he is found to be unwavering and steadfast, then it is said that his lineage is determined by strict adherence to virtue and non-virtue, and he is worthy of being accepted. Generally, there are three ways to determine lineage: natural, seeing the meaning, and determining by strict adherence to virtue and non-virtue. The first is to determine the lineage of the sharp-witted and secret mantra. The second is that once the view is realized, it cannot be changed by others. The third is the one just mentioned. If it is known that the person does not possess the qualities of a vessel, then one should temporarily remain neutral, or, if it is possible to teach the collection of explicit meaning that is suitable for his capacity, then one should teach it. As the former says: Appropriately show the body, give to the fierce beasts in dangerous places. Thus it is said. The second is: Only at the beginning, offering to the Three Jewels, giving torma to the spirits, reciting scriptures, making tsa-tsas, repairing roads, etc., the order of how much merit is accumulated.

Having generated the power of merit, as it is said: If the teacher is not pleased, and if the empowerments are not obtained, then the efforts of listening and so on will be fruitless and will be destroyed. As it is said, in order to make the disciple a suitable vessel, empowerment is given. The disciple should also first please the teacher, and having received the empowerment, abide in the vows and precepts, and thus listen to the tantra. From the point of truly contacting the meaning of the tantra onwards, perform the supplication to the lineage of the gurus, the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva, the practice of the protective wheel, and the offering of tormas. Both teacher and student should meditate as they have done before. Or, as it is said in the Guhyasamaja Tantra: In the activity of reciting the sutras and rituals, always make it the Vajra Dharma. Thus, the expounder may meditate on himself as the Speech Vajra Amitabha. Because in this very text it is said: In the palace of the wheel of speech, etc., in the mindstream of the empowerment of exposition, meditate on the appearance of Amitabha. In this way, the listener should also meditate on himself as Ratnasambhava, because it arises in the mindstream of the empowerment of listening in that way. Then, first prostrating to the Vajra Master, offer the fee and the mandala. Kneeling on both knees, with palms joined, say: Emaho! The secret of all Buddhas, the king of all thoughts, the tantra that extensively teaches the rituals, immaculate, profound, and difficult to fathom, the Vinaya, Sutra, Abhidharma, vows, practices, and accomplishments, the tantra of the rituals of body, speech, and mind, completely determining everything in this, by the power of self-secret means, for the benefit of all sentient beings, O Blessed One, I beseech you to speak to me. Thus, make the request three times. As it is said in the Fifty Verses on the Guru: Kneeling on both knees with palms joined, with the desire to listen and so on, make the request three times. Thus. Then, both teacher and student should abandon the eleven faults of body, speech, and mind and engage in teaching and listening. What are the eleven faults? They are: sleeping, stretching the legs, and other bad postures of the body; playing, joking, chattering, argumentative responses with hatred, excessive indulgence in debates that rely on speculation, lacking oral instructions, false oral instructions, immature individuals listening, the mind of seeking gain and fame, and the mind of competition. Having abandoned these, the teacher should possess the adornment of speech.
