Oh, thus it is said. Generally, there are four kinds of direct perception (mngon sum): sensory direct perception (dbang po), mental direct perception (yid), yogic direct perception (rnal 'byor), and self-awareness direct perception (rang rig). Here, it refers to realizing that the object to be viewed and the consciousness that views are inseparable, and clearly realizing it by itself, which is self-awareness direct perception. If these are made the object to be proven of the former and the measure of the latter, then it is a gradual way of realization. If it is in the state of being all at once, then all phenomena are in essence, the truth is inseparable and one, symbolized by the three symbolic letters, and through the power of its blessing, it is realized directly. Second, the reasoning of the three purities is: Thus, the outer and inner phenomena that appear are, in essence, originally enlightened as the nature of body and wisdom, because they possess the three purities. The three are: the outer environment, the five elements, are purified into the five mothers; the inner beings, the five aggregates, are purified into the five fathers; the continuum, the eight consciousness aggregates, are purified into the five wisdoms. As it says in this very text: "The environment, beings, and continuum are all realized as pure." And: "The continuum of self, other, and conceptualization, is completely pure, the supreme vehicle." Whatever is originally pure is pervaded by the absence of all obscurations, and it is pervaded by the fact that it is enlightened as the nature of body and wisdom, like the Dharmakaya. As it is also said: "All are the essence of the supreme, the Victorious Ones do not seek Dharma elsewhere." If one realizes the purity of self-nature, one is a Buddha, but merely abiding in it is not a Buddha. If one says so, whether realized or not, the purity of self-nature is a Buddha, just as conditioned phenomena are impermanent whether realized or not. Third, the reasoning of the four equalities is: Thus, the phenomena that appear are, in essence, additionally enlightened as the Dharmakaya, because they possess the four equalities. The four are: the conventional truth of name and non-name, both are unborn; the conventional truth of delusion and non-delusion, both are equal in illusion. These are the two common equalities. The two additional equalities are: the emptiness of negation and non-negation, both are the Dharmakaya of the seven noble treasures; the conventional truth of impure karmic appearance and pure divine appearance, both are equal in the mandala of the deity of the Rupakaya, so it is additional. As it says in this very text: "With two equalities and two additional equalities, the mandala is the realm of Samantabhadra." Fourth, the reasoning of the great self is: Samsara and Nirvana are

All these dharmas, as phenomena, appear in various ways, but if measured from the perspective of reality, they are not so. Because the nature of mind abides primordially in the essence of the great self-arisen wisdom. For example, just as one knows one's own lineage from the history of ancestors. As it is said in the 'Manifestation Treatise': 'How to measure is explained here by the words of the great sovereign, for the sake of wrong thoughts, cause and effect, self and other. All these appearances are each, the consciousness without self-nature, self-arisen wisdom appears without location.' And, for example, if worldly people tell the history of ancestors, just as one lineage knows another. If the root of all dharmas is debased, just as gold appears in various different shapes, self-awareness appears as anything, therefore it is the basis. And in 'Opening the Eye of Wisdom' it says: 'With the reasoning of the history of things, what need is there to speak of the great sovereign?' Here, incidentally, is a refutation of debate: Does one measure the object of clinging appearance with the four doors of reasoning at the same time, or one at a time? If the former, then four conceptualizations arise simultaneously in one stream of consciousness, because the three minds that measure measure at the same time. It is not acceptable, because 'beings do not hold two streams of consciousness.' Also, the 'Pramāṇavārttika' says, 'Two conceptualizations do not occur simultaneously.' Therefore, it is harmful. If the latter, then the four reasonings become repetitive, because the three measurers measure one object of measurement one at a time. Answer: Nyangtikpa said, 'It is true that measuring simultaneously or one at a time is true, but here neither of the two is the case, it depends on what one wants to prove.' What is said is excellent, because in complete severance, one wants to realize the self-character of the view that is beyond truth and falsehood, therefore with the reasoning of realization; one wants to realize the basis itself as one self-arisen wisdom, therefore with the reasoning of the great sovereign; in partial severance, one wants to purify the lower, regarding the impure and pure as clinging wrong thoughts, therefore with the reasoning of purification; one wants to be free from both severance and proof, therefore measuring with the reasoning of equality. Among them, the first is to realize the object to be proven based on the certainty of the relationship of that arising, while the latter
