It appears in all the fields of the ten directions and tames beings. The fourth (division) has two parts: a brief explanation and a detailed explanation. The first (division) is from "everything" to "vehicle." In general, there are three aspects to this: explaining the meaning of the word "vehicle," its divisions, and the meaning of each distinction. The meaning of the word is: from the word "yana" (Sanskrit Devanagari: यान, Sanskrit Romanization: yāna, Chinese literal meaning: vehicle), it has the function of carrying, so it is called "vehicle." That is, because it carries, it is a vehicle, like a good vehicle. Because it carries, it is a vehicle, that is, the person who travels relying on it. Because it carries, it is a vehicle, that is, the result that each person desires. In this regard, the Compendium says: "This vehicle is like a vast, immeasurable palace in the sky, it is the supreme vehicle that brings joy, happiness, and bliss. All sentient beings who ride on it will transcend suffering." Regarding the divisions, according to what is commonly known as the Sutra, Vinaya, and Abhidharma, the number of vehicles is not fixed, but rather, to suit the minds of the beings to be tamed, the Buddha teaches with great compassion according to what is appropriate. As the Extensive Sutra says: "The supreme vehicle is taught in countless ways, but it only appears in each individual's mind." And as the Lankavatara Sutra says: "To guide all sentient beings, I have taught all vehicles, but this does not specifically refer to anything." In short, to summarize briefly, as the White Lotus Sutra says: "There is only one Buddha vehicle, not two or three." This kind of statement is from the perspective of the result, and ultimately concludes in one vehicle. Or, from the Small Vehicle and the Great Vehicle, or from the perspective of cause and effect, it is divided into two vehicles. Or, from the Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Bodhisattva, it is divided into three vehicles. Or, from the vehicles of Samsara, the Guide, the Ascetic Outsider, and the Empowered One's means, it is divided into three vehicles. Or, adding the result vehicle, from the three vehicles of cause, it is divided into four vehicles. Or, from the three categories of the Characteristic School, the three categories of Outer Tantra, and the three categories of Inner Tantra, it is divided into nine vehicles. The Lankavatara Sutra says: "As long as the mind arises, the boundary of the vehicle cannot be reached; when the mind has changed, there is no vehicle and no traveler." Therefore, until the stages of the mind are exhausted, the boundary of the vehicle cannot be reached, it is inconceivable. And, the path on which one relies and the path one travels, etc., the meaning of the mind's self-nature being pure, even up to the realm of no object of focus, can be called a vehicle. In particular, according to what is said in this tantric text,

If all those inconceivable speech and thoughts of the incarnate beings were to be summarized, it would be as follows: Due to taming the disciples of the five types of aptitudes, they are taught by dividing them into five different vehicles. The meanings of each division are: The sound of Deva (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,meaning of Deva) has the meaning of enjoying happiness, so it is a god; the sound of Manusya (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,meaning of Manusya) has the meaning of having a strong mind, so it is a human, that is, due to the difference in merit, they become good supports. Its vehicle is: through the view of having faith in the other world and the results of actions, practicing the path of the ten virtuous actions, thereby being liberated from the lower realms, and through the magnitude of the power of virtuous actions, progressing to the ultimate happiness between humans and desire gods. On top of practicing the ten virtuous actions, by meditating on the four immeasurables and the unwavering samadhi, and the eight absorptions of the form and formless realms, one progresses to the position of the gods of the upper two realms. In the Lankavatara Sutra, the former is indicated by the word "chief," and is called the vehicle of the gods; the latter is said to be the vehicle of Brahma because it is pure and clean from the defilements of desire. Moreover, it is extensively said: Practicing the ten virtuous actions and abandoning non-virtue is the cause of being born as gods and humans in the desire realm. Cultivating the four immeasurables and meditating on the unwavering is the cause of being born in the Brahma realm and so on. So it is. The sound of Sravaka (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,meaning of Sravaka) has the meaning of listening and proclaiming, so they listen to the Dharma from the teacher and proclaim and hear the fruits they have obtained to others, so they are Sravakas. Its vehicle is: things, the coarse objects to be grasped and the continuum of the grasping mind, these are only appearances in conventional truth, without self-nature, so although they realize the selflessness of the person, they grasp the self of phenomena, believing that particles are composed of two parts, with intervals in between, and do not exist; and both establish the moment of the grasping mind as the ultimate truth. Regarding the results of actions, they practice without error in accepting and rejecting, and through the shamatha that makes the mind workable, and the vipassana that meditates on the sixteen aspects of the four truths, they gradually purify through the sixteen wisdoms such as what is abandoned by seeing on the path of seeing. After obtaining the path of seeing, through the path of meditation, they gradually abandon about four or less of the nine afflictions of the desire realm, and between six and eight, and the order of abandoning the ninth, thereby obtaining the temporary fruits, namely the stream-enterer, the once-returner, and the non-returner, and finally abandoning all the afflictions of the three realms, obtaining the fruit of the Arhat.
