Someone asked: "What is not? What is both? What is neither?" He replied: "Lord of Lanka, the four questions you asked are as follows: What is constant but not ripe? It is what has passed, benefiting immeasurable beings in samsara through the power of the lotus. What is ripe but not constant? It is the prior state of the earth. What is both? It is what has passed away along with the remainder. What is neither? It is completely pure." Again, the Lord of Lanka asked: "What are the actions of the lords of secrets? What is the body? What is the mind? What is the basis?" He replied: "Lord of Lanka, their actions are the actions of all Buddhas, that is, constant affairs appearing as anything. The body is the body of all Buddhas, that is, completely ripe. The mind is the mind of all Buddhas, that is, completely pure. The basis is the source of all Buddhas, that is, that itself. Lord of Lanka, they are many, and one, and one and many, and are also called beyond those. Why is that? Because the constant is immeasurable and various, it is called many. The ripe is called one because everything is one. The completely pure is called one and many because it is the basis of the constant and the ripe. That itself is called beyond those because their arising and dissolving have no increase or decrease of food." Again, the Lord of Lanka asked: "Are the lords of secrets the four constants? Or are they impermanent? Do they exist? Or do they not exist? Are they one? Or are they different?" The Lord of Secrets replied: "Lord of Lanka, the six questions you asked are as follows: They are not constant, nor are they impermanent. They are neither constant nor impermanent. They are not constant, nor are they not impermanent. They are not existent, but they are also non-existent. They are both existent and non-existent. They are neither existent nor non-existent. They are one, and they are different. They are neither one, nor are they not different. They are also liberated from the nature of one and different. Lord of Lanka, why is that? Like this, unchanging and

Without decay, and those arising that are unobtainable, are the basis of all. Boundaries are completely unobtainable, not annihilation, constantly arising, sublime intention, without substance, becoming the realm of pure lineage, transcending boundaries and center, transcending expression, thus is suchness, inconceivable, immeasurable, each's own field of activity, because any difference is the same, constant should also be paired, impermanent should also be paired, existent should also be paired, nonexistent should also be paired, one should also be paired, different should also be paired, liberation from the nature of one and different should also be paired. Lord of Lanka, thus for the sake of taming the tamable, the body is without certainty, but the inconceivable should be paired, five should also be paired, four should also be paired, three should also be paired, two should also be paired, one should also be paired, so-called body, speech, mind, qualities, activities, are merely nominal designations. Body is space, speech is sound, mind is suchness, qualities are illusion, activities are emanation, these are blessed to appear according to the intention of those to be tamed, but in reality, there is not even a little appearance. Lord of Lanka, the nature of these is the alaya-consciousness, the one who can know is wisdom, the manifest is the Buddha. Lord of Lanka, thus the nature of secret mantra, because it is completely difficult to measure, those of the realm of darkness designate it as alaya-consciousness. Those of the realm of light designate it as wisdom. The blind and others designate it as Buddha. Those with pure eyes know it as secret mantra. Then the Lord of Lanka asked again: Secret Lord, what is their pure land? What is their retinue? What teachings do they proclaim? What is the time? What is the activity? The Secret Lord replied: Lord of Lanka, the five questions you asked are as follows: That which is without self-nature, its pure land is unborn. The retinue is without those who become Buddhas. The teachings proclaimed are inconceivable. The time is beyond measure. The activity is non-action. That which is extremely pure, its pure land is vast and all-pervading. The retinue is wisdom.
